{"id":388147,"date":"2026-04-20T03:21:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T03:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/388147\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T03:21:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T03:21:20","slug":"these-intimate-photos-show-a-different-side-of-prince","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/388147\/","title":{"rendered":"These intimate photos show a different side of Prince"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prince is photographed on the sound stage at Paisley Park, his estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, in the summer of 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 10 years after his death, Prince remains one of the world\u2019s most enigmatic musicians.<\/p>\n<p>A musical genius who could play dozens of instruments and revolutionized stage performance, he remained intensely private until the end of his life.<\/p>\n<p>But those close to him knew someone different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really just flew by the seat of our pants,\u201d said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.steveparke.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steve Parke<\/a>, a photographer who was his Prince\u2019s art director for 13 years. Parke said Prince would often tell him: \u201cGrab your camera. We&#8217;re gonna go do something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/02-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Prince poses for an early morning portrait in September 1999.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/03-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Prince\u2019s guitar rests in a bed of purple flowers outside of his studio.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled a day in October 1999, when Prince asked him to accompany him to an arboretum near his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just wandered up around a bit,\u201d Parke said. \u201cBut it was like a full day of hanging out with him. Nobody tugging his sleeve to come to the studio. Nobody \u2014 meaning his own brain \u2014 being like, \u2018I need to go record.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parke snapped photos as they wandered around the grounds. \u201cIt was very relaxed, very chill,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/09-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    Prince is photographed at a local arboretum in October 1999. \u201cI never mentioned it to him, but I loved how his silhouette echoed one I remembered from \u2018Purple Rain\u2019 when I was a teenager,\u201d photographer Steve Parke says in his new book \u201cPrince: Black, White, Color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More often, Parke would photograph Prince during breaks while he was making music or rehearsing for a tour. A collection of his exclusive photos, many of which have never been published before, are in a new book, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Prince-Black-White-Color\/Steve-Parke\/9781788843508\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Prince: Black, White, Color<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/06\/02\/health\/prince-death-opioid-overdose\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Prince\u2019s death<\/a>, from an accidental fentanyl overdose on April 21, 2016, at the age of 57, shook the world, and those who loved him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hit me on so many levels,\u201d Parke said. \u201cWhen you&#8217;ve had someone not only be a personal friend, but a person you work for. There&#8217;s a cultural thing that goes with it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/05-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    \u201cWe pulled Prince\u2019s Plymouth purple Prowler onto the sound stage and shot a series of photos around it,\u201d Parke recalled from this shoot in August 1999. \u201cOne of my favorites shows him looking at me through the mirror. In the original color version, his reflected right eye was almost completely lost. During my black-and-white conversion, I was thrilled to discover that the eye emerged from the shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/06b-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was part of a series shot on the sound stage with Prince constantly in motion,\u201d Parke said of this fall 1999 photo. \u201cConsidering the limitations of my early digital camera, I was very happy to capture him mid-action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/07-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrince had started wearing his hair braided this way a few weeks before this (April 1999) shoot and seemed to really enjoy the look,\u201d Parke said. \u201cHe had also just had this striped suit made, so we photographed it extensively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parke recalled meeting Prince as something like serendipity.<\/p>\n<p>It was the 1980s and he was backstage taking photos at a Lionel Richie concert when he met Levi Seacer, Jr., a member of Sheila E.\u2019s band, longtime collaborators of Prince\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe chatted a bit and he said, \u2018Oh, you&#8217;re a photographer.\u2019 I said, \u2018Well, yeah, but I&#8217;m really an artist.\u2019 Seacer asked him to draw something, he made a little sketch on a napkin.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/08-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    This 1996 portrait of Prince, shot with a wide-angle lens, is one of the earliest photos that Parke took of him. \u201cAfter Prince selected this image as one he liked, I added a henna-like tattoo to his hand in Photoshop, which he loved,\u201d Parke said.<\/p>\n<p>They kept in touch and, when Seacer told him he would be joining Prince\u2019s band, he said he wanted Parke to come along.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m like, in my head at the time: \u2018What do you mean you&#8217;re going to take me with you? I&#8217;m not a musician,\u2019\u201d Parke said. \u201cBut I didn&#8217;t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It turned out that Prince wanted Parke to do set design for the 1988 single \u201cGlam Slam\u201d from the \u201cLovesexy\u201d album.<\/p>\n<p>Parke, a theater major in college, decided to go for it.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/14-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    Prince on his patio in Marbella, Spain. \u201cOne thing that always stands out to me is how often he was barefoot in my photos,\u201d Parke says in his book. \u201cGrowing up in the 1980s seeing his carefully crafted public image everywhere, that felt surprisingly rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because Prince was so busy, Parke said he only had three hours \u2014 and few resources \u2014 to come up with something.<\/p>\n<p>He drew up a sketch and showed it to Prince \u2014 who then promptly disappeared for three days. When the star returned, he had no compliments for Parke, but also no complaints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was kind of freaking out,\u201d he said. Convinced he had blown the job, he reached out to Seacer, who assured him that no news was good news and to keep doing the work.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/10-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    In September 2000, Prince was filming the video for \u201cWhen Eye Lay My Hands on U\u201d and allowed Parke to take photos. \u201cA dancer stood behind him with her arms wrapped around him, yet she remained completely unseen, which I thought was incredibly striking,\u201d Parke said.<\/p>\n<p>Parke went on to become Prince\u2019s art director for the next 13 years, designing stage sets and album covers and even hand-painting guitars and concert t-shirts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was really great about seeing potential in people and giving them opportunities, which is amazing when you think of the level he operated at,\u201d Parke said.<\/p>\n<p>Parks recalled Prince asking him if he was familiar with the then-new technology that was digital cameras and if he ever did any photography.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/12-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    \u201cWe were having dinner at a restaurant in Marbella, and Prince asked me to bring my camera,\u201d Parke said of this June 1999 shot. \u201cI did not have the heart to tell him that without a flash, shooting after dark would be difficult. As we left the restaurant, paparazzi flashes lit everything up. After they departed, we used the headlights of a friend\u2019s car and had them sit in front of the beams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/04-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    Prince at his home in Marbella, Spain, in June 1999. \u201cPrince thought it would be fun to shoot photos in the pool,\u201d photographer Steve Parke recalls in his new book. Parke stayed outside the water. \u201cI was certain that if I got in, he would mischievously splash me. I did not want to risk the camera, so I leaned over the pool instead, which was probably the more dangerous choice in the long run.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Parke said he shot photos before but had never used a digital camera, Prince\u2019s response was simple: \u201cOK, let\u2019s get a camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That set off a special, creative collaboration. Prince appears easy and comfortable in the many shots Parke took of the extremely private star.<\/p>\n<p>Parke shot Prince around the world, including at a home he kept in Marbella, Spain, and at the studio in Paisley Park.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/11-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    Prince looks in the mirror above his bed in Marbella, Spain. With him are his then-wife, Mayte, and their dog Mia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was always fun,\u201d Parke said, \u201cbut it was also always a little like, \u2018Oh I hope that (the photos) come out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back then, there was no way to view the digital images until they were downloaded \u2014 \u201cwhich, in my case, was with him sitting behind me, so you just prayed that everything came out OK,\u201d Parke said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think having shot film, I had a pretty good sense of how to expose things properly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/13-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    Prince at the arboretum in Minnesota. \u201cGiven how much Prince\u2019s eyes were part of his identity, I loved that he chose to close them in several images that day,\u201d Parke says in his book. \u201cBacklit by the sun, I was unsure whether anything would register on the camera at all, but instead a beautiful sunburst crossed his face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last time Parke saw Prince was in May 2015 when Parke was living in Baltimore and Prince traveled to the city to participate in a rally for peace after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/17\/us\/freddie-gray-george-floyd-comparison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the death of Freddie Grey<\/a> in police custody.<\/p>\n<p>Now, almost a decade after Prince\u2019s death, Parke is hoping these photographs help the world see Prince the way he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope people see him in kind of a different light,\u201d Parke said. \u201cThere\u2019s some of the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll star attitude in there, but there&#8217;s a lot more of him as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/15-prince-steve-parke-cnnphotos.JPG\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        \t\t\t\t    This photo from the Paisley Park sound stage was from Parke\u2019s first shoot with him in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Parke\u2019s book <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Prince-Black-White-Color\/Steve-Parke\/9781788843508\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cPrince: Black, White Color\u201d<\/a> was published by Simon &amp; Schuster and is available now.
