{"id":388521,"date":"2026-04-20T09:47:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T09:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/388521\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T09:47:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T09:47:16","slug":"did-christchurch-deliver-on-its-supercars-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/388521\/","title":{"rendered":"Did Christchurch deliver on its Supercars debut?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Supercars-Christchurch-Sunday-148-copy.jpg\" alt=\"POLL: Did Christchurch deliver on its Supercars debut?\"\/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe start of the fourth Repco Supercars Championship race at the Christchurch Super440.<\/p>\n<p>All four races delivered big results, with Kai Allen surviving an attack from Brodie Kostecki on Friday before flipping that script on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Payne put on a show for his home fans on Saturday afternoon with a dominant display and backed that up on Sunday in the feature race.<\/p>\n<p>Broc Feeney won the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy in a spectacular conclusion to the weekend when Ryan Wood\u2019s Toyota Supra suddenly stopped before Kostecki\u2019s bingle with Chaz Mostert.<\/p>\n<p>There was plenty of bumper-to-bumper racing, which peaked on Sunday afternoon when Jobe Stewart, Jackson Walls, and Rylan Gray created a Supercars sandwich on the first lap.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fcttn.com\/products\/v8s-in-nz-tee\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\" data-bid=\"1\" data-no-instant=\"1\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"https:\/\/speedcafe.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3-1.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, for all the off-track moments at Pothole and the door-banging action \u2013 there were only two Safety Cars across 172 laps for first lap melee on Sunday and Wood\u2019s ill Supra.<\/p>\n<p>Kiwi Supercars fans flocked to Ruapuna for the three-day event, with more than 60,000 lining the perimeter of the 3.3km circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger, who raced in the Historic Touring Cars, hailed the event a success.<\/p>\n<p>Mauger thanked Supercars for having \u201cfaith\u201d in Christchurch for putting the event on.<\/p>\n<p>Christchurch fought off interest from Cromwell and its Tony Quinn-owned Highlands destination.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn hosted Team 18 boss Charlie Schwerkolt at Highlands in the lead up to the Christchurch round, continuing their push for Supercars to race there in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always said, we\u2019ve got to roll out the red carpet for these guys because there are others who would like to see it,\u201d Mauger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to make it so the teams, the drivers really want to come back. I think you\u2019ve heard it from Broc, he loves it here, so keep it going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone that you saw going around had a smile on their face. It was outstanding. Everyone was over the moon. It was good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A talking point over the weekend was the circuit\u2019s facilities, which were bare-bones and make-shift in parts.<\/p>\n<p>Erebus Motorsport had to set up its pit boom next to a portable building while Triple Eight Race Engineering ended up pitting outside of the Supercars scales.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are in place to construct a permanent pit building in time for Supercars\u2019 return in 2027 as part of a broader upgrade plan.<\/p>\n<p>Mauger said Supercars and its drivers expect better facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese guys are professional race teams and they need to have similar what they should expect \u2013 what they see in other places, we get it here,\u201d Mauger added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working very hard.
