Arts Gallery in Bradford city centre to close

Trapezium Gallery, located on Kirkgate in Bradford city centre, will close on June 18 after nearly eight years due to the redevelopment of the Kirkgate Shopping Centre.

The gallery, run by a collective of volunteer artists, has been a hub for exhibitions by both individuals and community groups, and has aimed to make art accessible to the public in a casual, drop-in setting.

Co-founder Ken Woods said: “It is really sad to be leaving Kirkgate after so long.

“We have had three venues in the shopping centre during our tenure.

“It has been a wonderful place to work, with great facilities and the management and staff have all been fantastic.

“We would like to thank them for their support.”

The gallery was founded in 2018 by artists who met at Bradford School of Art and identified a lack of exhibition opportunities in the city.

Since then, the space has operated without external funding, relying instead on the use of empty shop units and the dedication of its volunteers.

Mr Woods said: “As volunteers, we curate the artwork and open the gallery three days a week for the general public.

“We hope we have been a valuable resource over the years.

“We have had a constant waiting list and demand for the space from local artists and institutions.

“It is sad to think that Bradford creatives will no longer have anywhere to display their work in this prime location, in the city centre.”

The team behind Trapezium are hoping to find a new home and are appealing to landlords or organisations who might be able to help.

Their final exhibition, titled Mayday!, will run from May 2 to May 30, and will feature artwork by the gallery’s volunteers.

The show will include painting, illustration, print-making, textiles, and documentary photography.

Mr Woods said: “We have estimated that each exhibition takes more than 150 hours of preparation and invigilation.

“This is our way of thanking the people who have given up their time to make Trapezium a successful gallery.

“We hope visitors will come and say goodbye but also help us celebrate what we have achieved.”

Opening hours for the exhibition are 11am to 3pm on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

A launch event will take place on May 2 from 12pm to 3pm, offering visitors the opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.

Trapezium Gallery, located on Kirkgate in Bradford city centre, will close on June 18 after nearly eight
