{"id":389489,"date":"2026-04-20T23:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T23:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/389489\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T23:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T23:15:08","slug":"nasa-shuts-down-voyager-1-instrument-to-keep-probe-exploring-interstellar-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/389489\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA shuts down Voyager 1 instrument to keep probe exploring interstellar space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-4a6a8387-5170-486d-a8bb-184223c0d813\">NASA engineers have shut down another instrument on Voyager 1 to preserve the power of the most distant spacecraft ever sent into space.<\/p>\n<p>The Low-energy Charged Particles experiment (LECP) was turned off on Friday (April 17) to ensure <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 1<\/a> has more time available to continue its exploration of space beyond the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 1977, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22729-voyager-1-spacecraft-interstellar-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22729-voyager-1-spacecraft-interstellar-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22729-voyager-1-spacecraft-interstellar-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 1 left the solar system <\/a>on August 25, 2012, passing a bubble of charged particles called the Heliopause that marks the outer limit of the sun&#8217;s cosmic backyard. As of this month, the spacecraft is the most distant man-made object from Earth at over 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0e62b0a0-9aa9-47bb-adac-7722553c3038-0\">Voyager 1 and its interstellar-exploring twin <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 2 <\/a>have been providing vital data about the so-called interstellar medium. The fact that they are currently the only spacecraft beyond the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> means they are uniquely positioned to collect this information.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>LECP has been operating aboard Voyager 1 almost since its launch. The purpose of the experiment is to measure low-energy charged particles from the solar system and beyond, such as ions, electrons, and so-called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32644-cosmic-rays.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32644-cosmic-rays.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32644-cosmic-rays.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cosmic rays.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The choice to switch off LECP wasn&#8217;t random. NASA engineers agreed years ago on the order in which Voyager 1 instruments should be shut down to preserve the dwindling nuclear power of the spacecraft.
