This was the first crewed mission to the moon since NASA&#8217;s final <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo<\/a> mission in 1972, over 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>On their incredible journey, the Artemis 2 crew went <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-head-toward-earth-record-breaking-moon-flyby\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-head-toward-earth-record-breaking-moon-flyby\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-head-toward-earth-record-breaking-moon-flyby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">farther from Earth<\/a> than humans have ever gone before \u2014 a whopping 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers) miles from home.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5114731f-82a8-4aec-82b6-3fb9dfb06cce\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Why is it incredible?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7b155dab-3100-4b2a-bd23-b907589f238e\">During their lunar flyby, the crew actually flew behind <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>, allowing them to see its mysterious far side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The moon is tidally locked in our orbit. This means that the moon has a side that is always facing us (the near side) and one that is perpetually facing away (the far side).
