Photo \/ Supplied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">They have also pleaded not guilty to injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the other man who was set upon earlier and whose shoes were stolen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The accused are Tuarima Issac Alexander, 22, Rua Waka Hune, 34, Takarangi Kumar, 19, and a fourth man who has name suppression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Cleary said the \u201csustained\u201d attack on Taylor by all  four defendants  lasted two minutes and continued after he was on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">She called it \u201csenseless street violence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">As one of the four stepped back, another would move forward to continue punching and kicking their victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Taylor was declared dead at the scene in Emerson St in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/napier\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/napier\/\">Napier<\/a> CBD after the four had left and a passer-by found him and called an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">A post-mortem examination found that he had multiple skull fractures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Taylor was 58 when he died and weighed only 62kg. He suffered from mental health issues and was living on the streets at the time he died. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">His movements through Napier that night and into the early hours, pushing his possessions in a shopping trolley, were captured by CCTV cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">So were those of his attackers, who spent time drinking at bars as well as walking in the central city and on Marine Parade. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Three of the four men accused of the murder of Boy Taylor behind a glass barrier during an earlier hearing in the High Court at Napier. Photo \/ Ric Stevens<\/p>\n<p>More than 40 hours of video collected<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Police collected more than 40 hours of CCTV footage during the investigation. Stills and video excerpts have been shown to the jury of nine men and three women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">At the start of the trial, Justice David Boldt said that the question for the jury was whether the four were guilty of manslaughter or murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The Crown would have to establish that they each intended to kill Taylor, or that they knew that the assault was likely to kill him and they were prepared to take that risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Lawyers for each of the four accused said that their clients did not intend to kill Taylor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">For Hune, lawyer Matthew Phelps said there was no question that Taylor\u2019s death was an \u201cabsolute tragedy\u201d and his client was not shying away from his actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut he says he is guilty of manslaughter and not murder &#8230; He certainly did not intend to kill him,\u201d Phelps said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Counsel Nicola Graham said that Alexander acknowledged attacking both men that night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMr Alexander admits taking part in the assault on Mr Taylor but he did not intend for him to die,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Counsel Leo Lafferty said his client, Kumar, also denied that he ever intended to kill Taylor or that he had \u201creckless murderous intent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Eric Forster, representing the defendant with name suppression, said that Taylor had thrown a bottle at the group before he was assaulted, cutting his client\u2019s leg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">However, what happened after that was \u201cviolence that went too far\u201d, Forster said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe didn\u2019t intend to kill Boy Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The trial is continuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Ric Stevens spent many years working for the former New Zealand Press Association news agency, including as a political reporter at Parliament, before holding senior positions at various daily newspapers.
