Recently, I received an Instagram message asking if anyone wanted to go out on a Sunday morning for what most would call a photo walk. I immediately replied yes. I’ve been wanting to go out and photograph something lately, but it hasn’t happened. We chose Iowa City, Iowa, for our “photo walk.” I dislike that term for some reason. I expected a morning of wandering and taking photos of whatever we encountered. But it turned into more than that: engaging conversations about more than just gear. In the end, these conversations made me feel whole. The greatest gift wasn’t a lens, a camera, or secret photo spots that every photographer knows — it was the creative dialogue that every photographer should ultimately share with others.

The Problem: Gear Talk Is Easy (and Addictive)

I have wondered why photographers are always talking about gear, specs, and settings. I have several friends who are artists in disciplines other than photography, and I have never heard them talk about the paint or paintbrushes they use. So why do photographers do it? Well, it’s easy, and after a while, it becomes addictive and normal. Besides it becoming easy to talk gear, it’s also a safe space. Gear and specs are one of those things that also allow you not to be vulnerable.

Gear talk often seems productive because it’s tangible. You compare specs, read reviews, discuss autofocus, and leave with a clear decision — buy this, avoid that. It feels like progress. However, in reality, your photography doesn’t improve. You haven’t practiced observing more keenly, improved your compositions, or taken creative risks — you’ve only gathered more knowledge.

What We Talked About InsteadIntent over settings: As we explored, we were not talking about gear and specs; we spoke about intent — why and how we could photograph a spot. We were talking about light and when to come back, rather than just making a photograph.Seeing: As the morning progressed, we had small conversations about why a particular place was a common location for others in the group to photograph. It was nice to hear the “why” behind the locations.Taste, Influence, and Risk: In the group, we had different styles. I was shooting with my Fujifilm X100V; others were using film, and one other was using the Nikon Df and Leica. Everyone had made a choice about why they brought that camera. Conversation led to, “I am using this film because,” or “I am using this camera because.” We were all looking for specific things to photograph, given our style. This led me to see things differently.Momentum: Creative talk changed the pace for the group. There were times we set our cameras aside and talked about the intent of photography. We were not rushing to the next location; we were just present. We looked at light and talked about how we were using it, and we did more experimenting overall.I Started Doing This

During our time out, I started doing things a little differently, and my focus changed outside my normal.

I worked scenes longer instead of collecting drive-by framesI shot a few frames that were intentionally weirdI asked myself, “Why this?” before “How to?”I paid attention to edges, backgrounds, and geometry more than exposure
Why This Matters More Than Ever

In today’s photography world, the current ecosystem rewards photographers, but not in the right way. I have seen this on Instagram Threads. A photographer posts a set of great images, and the first question is, “What camera did you use?” It seems we reward other photographers only when they buy a new lens, camera, or other piece of gear. We are not rewarded for great work or for discussing the intent behind the photographs we create.

Real growth comes from more than a new piece of gear — it comes from so much more. When we start paying attention, practicing, building community, and giving honest feedback, we grow significantly. You don’t need more gear. You need better input, and sometimes it all starts with a community of photographers and a 90-minute walk.

The rule (first 60 minutes): No gear talk. If someone starts, they owe the group a coffee.

Three prompts to keep it creative:

What caught your eye — and why? What would you remove to make this stronger? What’s the story/title of this frame?

The 10-minute wrap:

Everyone shows one image (or just describes it)Share intent and one thing you’d do differently next timeWe talked about our images after we edited a few and posted them in our Instagram chat.
The Real Takeaway

We didn’t just take steps that morning — we got our creativity back. We had actually created a small community of photographers with one mission: to get back together. I invite you to try a walk with a group or with another photographer. See if you come home with a clearer mind and more keepers. “The most underrated piece of gear in photography might be a small circle of people who talk about photographs as if they matter.”

Sit down with almost any photographer these days, and the conversation goes one of several ways: camera specs,…

[31
442,498,499,500,501,156,111,139,69
0":"post-390066","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-arts-and-design","8":"tag-arts","9":"tag-arts-and-design","10":"tag-artsanddesign","11":"tag-artsdesign","12":"tag-design","13":"tag-entertainment","14":"tag-new-zealand","15":"tag-newzealand","16":"tag-nz
["GET
