<\/p>\nPrince Harry shared the pain of his past – including the death of his mum, Princess Diana – in a moving speech in Australia, as experts give the Mirror their analyses<\/p>\n

He\u2019s known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, but Prince Harry<\/a> opened up like never before during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex\u2019s much-hyped four-day tour of Australia<\/a> last week. In an emotional outpouring in Melbourne, Harry revealed how he struggled in the early days of fatherhood<\/a>, admitting he felt a \u201cdisconnection\u201d while his wife was pregnant with Prince Archie, now six. He also spoke of the trauma of losing his mother, Princess Diana<\/a>.<\/p>\n Hinting that Meghan\u2019s first pregnancy<\/a> had left him feeling alone and isolated, he said, \u201cCertainly I felt a disconnection, because my wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it.\u201d<\/p>\n He also confessed to struggling directly in the aftermath of his son\u2019s birth. \u201cEvery single time I went to work and I came back \u2013 if I was stressed, the moment that I held Archie, he would start crying,<\/a>\u201d he said in a discussion with charity Movember\u2019s global director of men\u2019s health research, Dr Zac Seidler.<\/p>\n READ MORE: King Charles ‘dreading’ Donald Trump meeting amid Iran war tensions<\/a>READ MORE: Meghan Markle’s ‘flirty gesture’ on Australia visit that harks back to royal days<\/a> Harry talked about his late mother, Princess Diana, and why he blamed her ‘role’ for her death(Image: Daily Mirror)<\/p>\n The Sussex’s four-day trip to Australia included an Invictus Australia Reception at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n Former royal editor Duncan Larcombe, who worked closely with Harry and his brother, Prince William<\/a>, as youngsters, says he wasn\u2019t surprised by the emotional outburst, having seen Harry, 41, suffer \u201cmajor trauma\u201d in his childhood \u2013 especially after the tragic 1997 car crash that killed his mother.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s been quite open about his childhood being flawed and traumatic, and his personality is very much \u2018wear your heart on your sleeve\u2019, which is maybe why he is the one \u2013 as opposed to William \u2013 who seems tortured by it and why he\u2019s making these emotional outbursts,\u201d says Duncan. \u201cThere must have been times when that\u2019s been difficult for Meghan, too. But he seems more unhappy now than he\u2019s ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n After Meghan, 44, filmed her guest spot on MasterChef Australia, she watched on as Harry delivered a keynote speech at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne,<\/a> where he talked about fighting against his royal destiny as a youngster.<\/p>\n \u201cFor me, after my mum died just before my 13th birthday, I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t want this job\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want this role. Wherever this is headed, I don\u2019t like it. It killed my mum, and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years.\u201d<\/p>\n A young Harry with a young Prince William and their late mum Princess Diana (Image: UK Press via Getty Images)<\/p>\n He went on to admit he has felt \u201clost, betrayed or completely powerless\u201d in the past, adding that having to put on a brave face piled on the pressure even further. The prince also talked about how he felt the need to \u201ccleanse myself of the past\u201d in order to be the \u201cbest version\u201d of himself for his own children.<\/p>\n Child and educational psychologist Dr Ahmar Ferguson agrees that Diana\u2019s death, coupled with Harry\u2019s life under the royal microscope, has inevitably impacted his emotional state today, saying it also explains some of his early struggles during Meghan\u2019s pregnancy and after Archie\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n \u201cGrowing up with grief and periods of perceived emotional unavailability from a parent can shape a child\u2019s internal working model of relationships and leave them feeling more sensitive to connection and disconnection in adulthood,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n He adds that Harry\u2019s experiences likely left him feeling \u201cparticularly attuned to emotional distance\u201d and when Archie was born, keen to do things differently.<\/p>\n Harry said he wanted to ‘cleanse’ himself of his past in order to be the best dad to Archie and Lilibet(Image: INSTAGRAM\/@MEGHAN)<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s very common for new parents to reflect on their own upbringing and step into parenthood with an intention to do things differently,\u201d explains Dr Ferguson. \u201cThat might be wanting to be more present and emotionally available to create a sense of normality for the kids, and in Harry\u2019s case it speaks to a conscious effort to break patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, the one person who truly understands Harry\u2019s experiences \u2013 and would have been well-placed to guide him through the early stages of fatherhood \u2013 is his elder brother, William, 43.<\/p>\n \u201cWhenever I spoke to William about Harry back in the day, he was very, very protective of him,\u201d Duncan says. \u201cSo I\u2019m sure there will have been times in recent years when Harry missed the relationship with his brother.<\/p>\n “Their royal statuses aside, he will have missed having that person he turned to for support and advice, and maybe felt less isolated, especially when it came to becoming a father himself and struggling with elements of that experience.<\/p>\n \u201cWilliam had young kids already when Archie was born and he experienced the same childhood as Harry, so he would\u2019ve been the perfect person for him to talk to, but sadly that\u2019s not how it\u2019s played out.\u201d<\/p>\n Get the inside scoop on the monarchy with Mirror Royal<\/p>\n WHATSAPP GROUP: Be first to get the biggest royal bombshells and exclusives to your phone by joining our Royal WhatsApp here.<\/a><\/p>\n We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
