(Image credit: NASA\/Jolearra Tshiteya)<a id=\"elk-f752839e-2bd0-451c-8461-6443100714d9\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>News conference and launch<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-649b85a8-4aa0-4056-82c4-2d11bb523650-0\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-to-unveil-complete-roman-telescope-host-media-briefing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-to-unveil-complete-roman-telescope-host-media-briefing\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to NASA<\/a>, briefing participants, who will discuss the telescope&#8217;s progress and science plans, include:<\/p>\n<p>NASA Administrator Jared IsaacmanNicky Fox, associate administrator, science mission directorateJamie Dunn, Roman telescope project managerJulie McEnery, Roman telescope senior project scientist.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-93d316a1-a01b-4089-9a5e-cc6bf6c049a7\">The news conference will take place at NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/goddard-space-flight-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goddard Spaceflight Center <\/a>in Greenbelt, Maryland, where Roman was built.<\/p>\n<p>Roman is almost finished its prelaunch testing at Goddard ahead of its last big journey on Earth \u2014 a shipment to NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> in Florida, where the telescope will launch aboard <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon Heavy between autumn 2026 and May 2027.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-a54c86ad-8653-4613-87df-6b9d8f7871d5\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What is Roman?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-12cea772-6707-4e98-b1a0-055997f590cf\">Roman, estimated to cost more than $4 billion, is a big survey telescope designed to show astronomers more about how the universe formed and evolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Roman has a telescope mirror similar in size to the famed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, at 8 feet or 2.4 meters. But the key difference is scope: Hubble narrows in on fine details, while Roman aims to survey the sky with a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at large-scale structure of galaxies and stars is part of Roman&#8217;s work, as it seeks to answer questions about how the universe formed, evolved and expanded with investigations concerning <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-201b0c61-deed-4010-9fbb-5d4dc9ece398\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Searching for exoplanets<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b4dabd7b-d50e-4607-bfa6-0dedd43884a0\">Roman will also do a &#8220;Galactic Bulge Time-Domain Survey&#8221; to look at the central bulge of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way galaxy<\/a>.
