Medical staff, including a doctor and nurses, will be funded through the province\u2019s Medical Care Plan (MCP) and the Nurse Practitioner Funding Pilot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First Light says the clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/st-john-s-indigenous-health-clinic-9.7124136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">could ultimately save the health system millions.<\/a> In the St. John&#8217;s area, there are about 7,000 Indigenous people, and as many as 1,300 don&#8217;t have a primary care provider, according to First Light.<\/p>\n<p>Inuk elder Emma Reelis told reporters about her experience with the province\u2019s\u00a0health-care system, and how she hasn\u2019t always been met with understanding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had experiences with going to the Health Sciences and St. Clare&#8217;s. \u2018Oh hello, Mrs. Reelis&#8230;how are you today? Where are you from?\u2019 I said I&#8217;m from Labrador. CBC&#8217;s Mark Quinn reports.<\/p>\n<p>Reelis also hopes that the clinic will help residential school survivors, such as herself, and their children who are still dealing with trauma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of our people that suffer from residential schools [and] that was passed onto our children.
