Female advisers do that as well,” Klement said of the tendency to provide self-interested recommendations.

“Advisers are incentivised to sell higher-margin products, so if you encounter a less sophisticated client, the temptation is to sell them a seemingly simpler, but more expensive product like an in-house multi-asset fund.”

The research adds to scrutiny of the financial advice industry at a time when the UK is trying to overhaul the way Britons approach saving and investing.

Business newsletter

The business editor’s exclusive analysis of all the latest financial and economic news.

     Sign up with one click

This month new “targeted support” rules from the Financial Conduct Authority came into force, which allow financial firms to make generic suggestions to customers. The idea is to close the so-called advice gap, whereby millions of people who would benefit from financial advice do not receive it, usually because it is too expensive.

More broadly, the government also wants to encourage more people to put their cash into the financial markets. As part of this push, several City firms, including St James Place and Quilter, two of the country’s biggest wealth managers, are funding a campaign that will attempt to foster a more vibrant investment culture in the UK.

Women are given worse guidance from their financial advisers than men, according to research that suggests female clients…

[14
138,246,111,139,69,244,245
0":"post-390971","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-personal-finance","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-finance","10":"tag-new-zealand","11":"tag-newzealand","12":"tag-nz","13":"tag-personal-finance","14":"tag-personalfinance
["GET
