It also sharpens the case for unseen mass shaping cosmic motion.<\/p>\n<p>Across cosmic distances<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (<a href=\"https:\/\/act.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ACT<\/a>) and galaxy records capture clusters separated by vast distances where gravity\u2019s reach can be tested directly.<\/p>\n<p>Working with those observations, physicist Patricio A. Gallardo at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Pennsylvania<\/a> linked the motions of distant systems to how strongly gravity pulls across space.<\/p>\n<p>Across separations stretching hundreds of millions of light-years, that pull weakened almost exactly as Newton\u2019s rule predicts, matching expectations even under extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Such close agreement leaves little space for competing explanations and sets up the deeper question of what unseen mass accounts for the excess motion.<\/p>\n<p>Why motions clashed<\/p>\n<p>Far from galactic centers, stars and whole <a href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/news\/gravity-follows-newton-and-einsteins-rules-even-cosmic-scales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">galaxies<\/a> often move faster than visible matter alone should allow.<\/p>\n<p>Many physicists call the extra pull dark matter \u2013 matter that does not emit or absorb light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAstrophysics has been plagued by a massive discrepancy in the cosmic ledger,\u201d said Gallardo.<\/p>\n<p>That mismatch became the reason to test gravity directly instead of arguing from missing mass alone.<\/p>\n<p>Light from beginnings<\/p>\n<p>To test the force directly, the team used the cosmic microwave background (<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/astrophysics\/programs\/physics-of-the-cosmos\/big-bang-and-the-evolution-of-the-universe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CMB<\/a>), the leftover light from the young universe.<\/p>\n<p>Released about 380,000 years after the Big Bang, that glow has crossed space ever since and still carries ancient information.<\/p>\n<p>When moving clusters sit in its path, the passing radiation picks up a minute change that reveals their motion.<\/p>\n<p>Those tiny changes turned old light into a way to measure how strongly distant structures pull on one another.<\/p>\n<p>Motion in the signal<\/p>\n<p>That disturbance is the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, a tiny mark left when cluster gas scatters background light.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the telescope maps, a Sloan Digital Sky Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdss.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">catalog<\/a> supplied the galaxy systems whose separations could be compared.<\/p>\n<p>By matching pairs spaced roughly 100 million to 750 million light-years apart, the researchers tracked how the pull faded.<\/p>\n<p>Because acceleration changes speed over time, those pairings turned motion into a direct test of gravity\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n<p>Results support Newton<\/p>\n<p>After all that matching, gravity followed the inverse-square law, weakening with the square of distance.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of fading more slowly, gravity weakened almost exactly at the rate scientists expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is remarkable that the law of the inverse of the squares, proposed by Newton in the 17th century and then incorporated by Einstein\u2019s theory of general relativity, is still holding its ground in the 21st century,\u201d said Gallardo.<\/p>\n<p>That near miss from the exact value of two was small enough to keep Newton\u2019s old rule firmly in place.<\/p>\n<p>Modified gravity shrinks<\/p>\n<p>One rival idea, Modified Newtonian Dynamics (<a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/1983ApJ...270..365M\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">MOND<\/a>), tries to explain fast motions by altering gravity itself.<\/p>\n<p>In that picture, the pull should fade more slowly than Newton\u2019s rule predicts when systems get very far apart.<\/p>\n<p>Here, a slower fade would have shown up as a smaller exponent than two, but the measurement stayed near Newton.<\/p>\n<p>That outcome did not kill every variant, yet it left much less room for gravity-only explanations on these scales.<\/p>\n<p>Missing mass remains<\/p>\n<p>Once gravity stayed ordinary, the missing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/invisible-tug-in-earths-gravitational-field-hints-big-changes-beneath-planet-surface\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pull<\/a> had to come from matter that still hides from telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>Dark matter remains the leading answer because extra mass strengthens gravity and keeps fast-moving systems bound together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study strengthens the evidence that the universe contains a component of dark matter,\u201d said Gallardo.<\/p>\n<p>That statement also marks the limit of the result, because the measurement says nothing about what that component is.<\/p>\n<p>Bigger surveys ahead<\/p>\n<p>Better maps and larger galaxy catalogs should let this method <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/the-first-blood-test-to-detect-me-cfs-may-be-closer-to-becoming-reality\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">test<\/a> gravity with much finer precision in coming years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used around 300,000 galaxies for this measurement, but the technique should work with samples of 10 million or more,\u201d said Gallardo.<\/p>\n<p>With samples that large, future surveys could rule out a much flatter rule for gravity with far more confidence.<\/p>\n<p>That would turn today\u2019s strong consistency check into a much harsher stress test for any theory that bends gravity.<\/p>\n<p>What still remains<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the result does not reveal the particle behind dark matter or settle every cosmic disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>It asks a narrower question \u2013 whether gravity changes across giant separations \u2013 and answers that one with unusual clarity.<\/p>\n<p>Future teams can reuse the same approach on richer surveys, different cluster samples, and cleaner maps of ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/quantum-battery-uses-light-to-store-and-deliver-power\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the oldest light in the universe says the familiar rule still governs the largest known structures.<\/p>\n<p>Gravity holds for now<\/p>\n<p>Across every section of this result, from old light to cluster motions, the same message keeps appearing: gravity behaves normally.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves cosmologists chasing the harder problems: what dark matter is, how far these tests can sharpen, and whether smaller cracks still wait.<\/p>\n<p>The study is published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/rk8v-rcm3\"
