{"id":391564,"date":"2026-04-22T04:46:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/391564\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T04:46:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:46:14","slug":"exclusive-spacex-says-unproven-ai-space-data-centers-may-not-be-commercially-viable-filing-shows-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/391564\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive-SpaceX says unproven AI space data centers may not be commercially viable, filing shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">By Echo Wang<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">NEW YORK, April 21 (Reuters) &#8211; SpaceX warned investors that its ambitions to build space-based <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:artificial intelligence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;artificial intelligence&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> data centers, as well as human settlements on the moon and Mars, \u200crely on unproven technologies and may not become commercially viable, according to a company filing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The business \u200crisks laid out in SpaceX&#8217;s pre-IPO filing, which have not been previously reported, present a far more cautious assessment of the rocket \u200bmaker&#8217;s future than the vision laid out publicly by billionaire CEO Elon Musk in recent weeks, as the company gears up for what could be the largest initial public offering in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Risk factors in a prospectus are required by U.S. securities law and are designed to inform investors of potential pitfalls while also shielding companies from future legal \u200cliability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;Our initiatives to develop orbital AI \u2060compute and in-orbit, lunar, and interplanetary industrialization are in early stages, involve significant technical complexity and unproven technologies, and may not achieve commercial viability,&#8221; SpaceX said in an \u2060excerpt from the S-1 filing, which was seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Any future AI orbital data centers will operate &#8220;in the harsh and unpredictable environment of space, exposing them to a wide and unique range of space-related risks that could cause them \u200bto \u200bmalfunction or fail,&#8221; the document said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">MUSK SAYS AI IN SPACE \u200bIS A &#8216;NO-BRAINER&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Companies use the S-1 registration document \u200cto disclose their finances and risks before going public. SpaceX is targeting a listing in the coming months at a valuation of roughly $1.75 trillion with a $75 billion raise, which would make it the largest initial public offering in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Musk said at the World Economic Forum in January that building AI data centers in space was &#8220;a no-brainer&#8221; and that it would be the cheapest place to put AI within two to three years.
