{"id":391720,"date":"2026-04-22T07:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T07:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/391720\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T07:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T07:15:09","slug":"in-the-us-where-people-breathe-increasingly-dirty-air-one-small-city-stands-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/391720\/","title":{"rendered":"In the US, where people breathe increasingly dirty air, one small city stands out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907p3x006g26qi7v87c4iu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The American Lung Association calls it a \u201cgrim indication of the deterioration of air quality nationwide\u201d: Bangor, Maine, is the last city standing on all three of its \u201ccleanest cities\u201d lists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo92tysw00093b6tb774r0wl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bangor has zero days of unhealthy ozone and short-term particle pollution, and some of the lowest year-round concentrations of dangerous particle pollution in the country, according to the association.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkp0001336q9ulnmavp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Typically, the association\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/research\/sota\/city-rankings\/cleanest-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cState of the Air\u201d<\/a> report has at least one other city making all three lists. In some years, it\u2019s had several. But this year\u2019s report, published Wednesday, has the Queen City of the East \u2013 home of horror author Stephen King and the mythical birthplace of lumberjack Paul Bunyan \u2013 standing alone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0002336q75t02x75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The country\u2019s air quality is dangerous for millions of Americans, the report says. Nearly half the population \u2013 about 152 million people \u2013 breathes unhealthy air and lives in a county that the association gives a failing grade for air pollution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0003336qgln0rf37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 32.9 million people live in counties with failing grades for all three pollution measures, and people of color are more than twice as likely as White people to live in a community with a failing grade on all three.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c-gettyimages-2268545795.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles has the worst ozone pollution in the country, according to the new report.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1682\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0006336qxdouepu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ozone and particle pollution are considered two of the most widespread and dangerous pollutants measured by the US Environmental Protection Agency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics#:~:text=Size%20comparisons%20for%20PM%20particles,the%20Harmful%20Effects%20of%20PM?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The EPA<\/a> defines particulate matter \u2013 also called particle pollution or soot \u2013 as a mix of solid and liquid droplets that float in the air. It can come in the form of dirt, dust or smoke. Coal- and natural gas-fired power plants create it, as do cars, agriculture, unpaved roads, construction sites and wildfires.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0007336q2mj5ge61@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Particle pollution threatens human health because it is so tiny \u2013 a fraction of the width of a human hair \u2013 and can travel past the body\u2019s usual defenses. When a person breathes these particles, they can get stuck in the lungs and move into the bloodstream, causing irritation and inflammation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0008336qmo1v9zb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even in the short term, particle pollution exposure can cause breathing problems or trigger a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/air-research\/air-pollution-and-cardiovascular-disease-basics#:~:text=Fine%20particulate%20matter%20(particulate%20matter,related%20heart%20attacks%20and%20death.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart attack.<\/a> Particle pollution is also considered a significant factor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/ambient-(outdoor)-air-quality-and-health#:~:text=Overview,key%20to%20protecting%20public%20health.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">premature death<\/a> around the world, according to the World Health Organization. Exposure can raise the risk of conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/risk\/risk-factors\/fine-particle-air-pollution#:~:text=How%20is%20fine%2Dparticle%20air%20pollution%20linked%20to%20breast%20cancer?&amp;text=Women%20living%20and%20working%20in,work%20in%20less%20polluted%20areas.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">certain<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/high-levels-particulate-air-pollution-associated-increased-breast-cancer-incidence#:~:text=September%2011%2C%202023-,High%20levels%20of%20particulate%20air%20pollution%20associated%20with%20increased%20breast,droplets%20found%20in%20the%20air.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4276028\/#:~:text=Short%2Dterm%20exposure%20to%20particulate,ischemic%20or%20intracerebral%20hemorrhage%20mortality.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stroke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/asthma\/asthma-triggers-causes\/air-pollution-smog-asthma\/#:~:text=The%20smallest%20particles%20(PM2.5,lungs%20or%20even%20your%20blood.&amp;text=People%20with%20asthma%20are%20at,airways%20and%20make%20asthma%20worse.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asthma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/15-10810\/#:~:text=Discussion,in%20risk%20by%20gestational%20period.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">preterm births<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/air-pollution-linked-dementia-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dementia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10015654\/#:~:text=Recent%20studies%20have%20also%20identified,et%20al.%2C%202021).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10077109\/#:~:text=results%20were%20robust.-,Conclusions,Supplement%201.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anxiety<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0009336q1159fxb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ground-level-ozone-pollution\/ground-level-ozone-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ozone pollution<\/a>, also called smog, is the presence of ground-level ozone that forms when chemicals like nitrogen oxides and volatile organics from electric utilities, car exhaust, gasoline vapors, industrial facilities and chemical solvents react to sunlight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq000a336qtmn4u194@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Exposure to ozone pollution can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ozone-pollution-and-your-patients-health\/health-effects-ozone-patients-asthma-and-other-chronic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asthma attacks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/air\/humanhealth-ozone.htm#:~:text=Ozone%20can%20irritate%20your%20respiratory%20system.%20When,deeply%20and%20easily%20as%20you%20normally%20would.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chest pain<\/a> in the short term. Long-term exposure can also cause <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6834528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decreased lung function<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/ozone-pollution-and-your-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">premature death<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0005336q8vly8u97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The data in the new report comes from 2022-24, the latest available from the EPA. Ozone pollution affected more people in the US in this year\u2019s report than in the previous five. Levels of particle pollution showed some improvement, but groups exposed to high levels of this pollution faced much higher levels than in the past.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkq0004336q86h2lq8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Los Angeles remains the worst in the country for ozone pollution, as it has been in all but one of the 27 years of the report. Bakersfield, California, has the worst year-round particle pollution for the seventh year in a row, but it improved this year in terms of short-term particle pollution. Now Fairbanks, Alaska, is ranked as worst on the short-term particle pollution list.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000b336q3g7ht7gy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bangor earned an \u201cA\u201d for ozone and short-term particle pollution exposure and came in 10th on the list of 25 cities with the lowest year-round particle levels. Bozeman, Montana, took the top spot there this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000c336qqb9fw6f1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The last time only one city made the three clean-air lists was 2012, when Santa Fe-Espanola, New Mexico, was named the top city. In 2022, 10 cities made the lists.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        \u2018An important part of our brand\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000d336q2o0lgzu2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bangor\u2019s presence on the cleanest air lists for several years has been a real selling point for city, according to Anne Krieg, the city\u2019s director of community &amp; economic development department.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000e336qqdx9k2md@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve heard many people say that they\u2019ve read that Bangor has the cleanest air, and \u2018I want to be there for that,\u2019 \u201d Krieg said. \u201cIt\u2019s healthy, and there\u2019s a good outdoor environment. It\u2019s really an important part of our brand. You can have a city life but also have access to clean air. Not a lot of cities do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000f336qrbmlxv6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few factors set the city\u2019s air apart from much of the rest of the country, said Dr. Jean MacRae, <a href=\"https:\/\/mcec.umaine.edu\/home\/faculty222\/jean-d-macrae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an associate professor<\/a> who teaches a course in air pollution and solid waste at the University of Maine\u2019s College of Engineering and Computing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000g336qgriliu3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The area benefits from weather systems, a high concentration of forest land that filters the air, a good distance from polluting industries and a population of only about 33,000, so there are not as many cars on the road.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000h336q4a018w67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSometimes, bad air comes up the coast, so the southern part of the state sees some of that,\u201d MacRae said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000i336qgw8dthd8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Maine itself has been called the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcm.org\/climate\/tailpipe-nation-maine-deserves-cleaner-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tailpipe of the Nation<\/a>\u201d since pollution from power plants and car manufacturers in the Midwest and from Northeastern states would drift toward it, but \u201cair pollution controls have really reduced that over time,\u201d MacRae said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000j336qyf8xwwb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, two US senators from Maine are credited with ushering in some of the country\u2019s most important air pollution regulations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000k336qcvj7c5kr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Edmund Muskie championed the <a href=\"https:\/\/themainemonitor.bluelena.io\/lt.php?x=3TxtmrUFUqPUT55qA3P3UeJs1nQjjgLyjepjYnU2JFiiD5V5y_25UhKc2KBVjAVfx1KzYnkWIFSa95.KzNHJUL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clean Air Act of 1970<\/a>, which created the first federal limits on pollution and launched the EPA. Sen. George J. Mitchell helped create the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/1990-clean-air-act-amendment-summary#:~:text=The%201990%20Clean%20Air%20Act%20amendments%20were,and%20other%20innovative%20approaches**%20*%20**Performance%2Dbased%20standards**\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1990 Clean Air Act Amendment<\/a> that required states meet air quality goals and tightened car and truck emission standards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo92qhv500073b6t0uyvy126@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The success of those protections is threatened under the Trump administration, according to Will Barrett, the assistant vice president of nationwide clean air advocacy with the American Lung Association.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000l336qymdc3qcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSignificant rollbacks to our critical life-saving clean air rules are well underway because this EPA is moving away from their public health mission,\u201d Barrett said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000m336qu5m3pa7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The administration has undertaken what the EPA called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-launches-biggest-deregulatory-action-us-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cbiggest deregulatory action in US history<\/a>,\u201d reconsidering regulations on power plants, the oil and gas industry, mercury and toxic air standards, the greenhouse gas reporting program and curbs on car and truck pollution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo907vkr000o336qirzfgqn5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The climate crisis also makes it more difficult to breathe clean air.
