{"id":392092,"date":"2026-04-22T12:26:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/392092\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T12:26:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:26:18","slug":"dirty-coal-and-dirty-water-greenpeace-condemns-proposed-fertiliser-factory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/392092\/","title":{"rendered":"Dirty coal and dirty water: Greenpeace condemns proposed fertiliser factory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greenpeace is condemning the proposal to build a \u2018coal-to-fertiliser\u2019 factory in Southland through the Fast Track process, saying it will worsen climate change, further contaminate drinking water, and destabilise food system resilience in Aotearoa.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace agriculture spokesperson Will Appelbe says, \u201cThis year, New Zealand communities have been hit repeatedly with deadly floods and storms, driven by the climate crisis, which have destroyed homes and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in the middle of this, an Australian company wants to come to New Zealand and use one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env-health.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/HEAL-Lignite-Briefing-en_web-1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dirtiest, most polluting fossil fuels<\/a> to create more fertiliser for New Zealand\u2019s dirtiest, most climate-polluting industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis proposal would add to a toxic cocktail of pollution that is cooking the climate, contaminating drinking water, and wrecking lakes and rivers across the country. It would burn more fossil fuels and fundamentally increase New Zealand agribusiness\u2019 reliance on unsustainable inputs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2022\/01\/16\/emissions-from-farm-fertilisers-are-flying\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Synthetic nitrogen fertiliser is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand than the entire domestic aviation industry<\/a>, and is also one of the biggest contributors to contamination in freshwater ecosystems, leading to nitrate contamination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody has the right to safe, clean drinking water, swimmable rivers, and a stable climate \u2013 and we want our kids and grandkids to get to experience that too. Building the proposed factory would undermine those rights for future generations, all for the sake of producing milk powder for use in confectionery products,\u201d says Appelbe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fertiliser plant would induce demand, and bake in a reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser for decades, forcing New Zealand farmers to stay trapped in a system that doesn\u2019t work for people, animals, or the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Access to fertiliser is a hot topic for New Zealand farmers, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
