The annual Lyrid meteor shower is among the most ancient on record, having been observed for the past 2,700 years, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/c-1861-g1-thatcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/c-1861-g1-thatcher\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-467eaa2d-8d1f-4faa-99c0-e6cf65d87885-1\">This year&#8217;s Lyrid meteor shower reached peak activity in the early hours of April 22, as Earth passed through the densest seam of comet Thatcher&#8217;s debris trail.
