{"id":392253,"date":"2026-04-22T14:54:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T14:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/392253\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T14:54:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T14:54:28","slug":"person-waiting-for-bus-in-auckland-stabbed-multiple-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/392253\/","title":{"rendered":"Person waiting for bus in Auckland stabbed multiple times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4JPS104_Screenshot_2026_04_22_103141_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"603\" alt=\"Map of the streets around Station Road, Manurewa.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPolice were called to Manurewa Railway Station about 1.20am on Wednesday 22 April.<br \/>\nPhoto: Google Maps\n<\/p>\n<p>A person waiting for a bus in Auckland has been stabbed multiple times.<\/p>\n<p>Police say they were called to Manurewa Railway Station about 1.20am on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>They said the victim was approached by someone they didn&#8217;t know, who stabbed them repeatedly and tried to take their backpack.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the public who saw the attack drove towards the pair which made the offender take off, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The stabbing victim was taken to hospital in a serious condition.<\/p>\n<p>A 24-year-old man is due in Manukau District Court charged with wounding with intent.<\/p>\n<p>Auckland Transport says there were no buses running at the time, and the train station was closed.<\/p>\n<p>Its bus team confirmed there were no buses at the station between 12.40am and 5.15am.<\/p>\n<p>AT said it was a stretch to link the attack to public transport or describe the victim as a passenger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was the information provided to us by the victim,&#8221; police said when approached.<\/p>\n<p>Auckland councillor for the Manurewa-Papakura ward, Matt Winiata, said the attack was shocking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s absolutely horrible, that&#8217;s just down across the train tracks from my local supermarket at South Mall there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Before AT&#8217;s response, Winiata said more people were being expected to use public transport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anyone should have the right to be able to take a trip anywhere and arrive safe, wait anywhere safe without having to worry about this,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Winiata said Manurewa had &#8220;a really bad issue&#8221; with homeless people and rough sleepers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So whether or not that&#8217;s related, it does come across as an area that you potentially wouldn&#8217;t want to be waiting around for too long at that time of night,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>So there&#8217;s a number of things that we need to look at across this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anyone should be able to wait safely without having to worry about that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Winiata said his thanks went out to the person who saw the attack and responded, and to police who tracked the alleged offender down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But from a public transport point of view we need to be providing everything that we can do ensure that people feel safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to come as a shock to anyone, the station is not too far away from where I live so it&#8217;s quite worrying that people are prepared to go to these lengths at that time, or any time of the day,&#8221; Winiata said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Police were called to Manurewa Railway Station about 1.20am on Wednesday 22 April.
