Mayfield calls for hospital impact report at HCA stockholder meeting; proposal fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcahealthcare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HCA Healthcare<\/a>, the owner of Mission Health&#8217;s Mission Hospital in Asheville, hosted its annual stockholder meeting on Thursday, April 23, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, North Carolina state Sen. Julie Mayfield (NC-49) presented a proposal for an impact report and called for more transparency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Would require the company to prepare a report assessing the impacts on communities of all of its hospital acquisitions in the last decade,&#8221; Mayfield said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the report would look at the number of physicians who have left since HCA Healthcare\u2019s hospital acquisitions. It would also include what patients are saying about their care and examine nurse-to-patient ratios.<\/p>\n<p>Mayfield said in the seven years since HCA purchased Mission, the hospital has been flagged with four findings of &#8220;Immediate Jeopardy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/independent-monitor-holds-listening-session-on-hcas-ownership-of-mission-hospital-immediate-jeopardy-transylvania-county-centers-medicare-medicaid-services-hca-jerry-coya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">INDEPENDENT MONITOR CONCERNED ABOUT MISSION HOSPITAL&#8217;S RECENT &#8216;IMMEDIATE JEOPARDY&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mayfield&#8217;s proposal at the stockholders&#8217; meeting didn&#8217;t pass, and she said she didn&#8217;t expect it to.<\/p>\n<p>She said she wanted to bring awareness of these issues to the board of directors and investors.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Sarver, the campaign director for <a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimhealthcarewnc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reclaim Healthcare WNC<\/a>, was also in the meeting as a shareholder.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want more information and we want accountability and transparency from Mission and HCA, so we weren&#8217;t expecting it to pass, but hopefully this continues to apply pressure,&#8221; said Sarver.<\/p>\n<p>Mayfield says the only reason she bought shares was to make this proposal. (Photo: WLOS staff)<\/p>\n<p>But she&#8217;s hoping things change enough next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The relationship that our community has with HCA could be in a very different place in a year, and if that were the case, I would have no reason to submit this again,&#8221; Mayfield said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/mission-hospital-immediate-jeopardy-centers-medicare-medicaid-services-hca-healthcare-patient-deaths-measles-nurses-state-senator-julie-mayfield-community-advocate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MISSION HOSPITAL EXPECTED TO HIRE INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT AFTER &#8216;IMMEDIATE JEOPARDY&#8217; STATUS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>News 13 reached out to Mission Health spokesperson Nancy Lindell, who sent us back a statement:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With respect to the shareholder proposal presented by Senator Mayfield at today&#8217;s annual meeting, we are pleased that the preliminary voting report indicated significant shareholder support for the company&#8217;s position and that the proposal was not approved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;HCA recommended voting against the proposal. Unfortunately, they feel like it&#8217;s in their best interest to not be transparent and accountable around things like nurse-to-patient staffing ratios,&#8221; said Sarver.<\/p>\n<p>Lindell&#8217;s statement also said, in part, &#8220;In early February, CMS accepted our enhanced plan of correction and we are pleased with the progress we have made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>MISSION HEALTH FULL STATEMENT:<\/p>\n<p>With respect to the shareholder proposal presented by Senator Mayfield at today\u2019s annual meeting, we are pleased that the preliminary voting report indicated significant shareholder support for the Company\u2019s position and that the proposal was not approved.  We will file a Form 8-K with the SEC disclosing the final voting results.In early February, CMS accepted our enhanced plan of correction, and we are pleased with the progress we have made.
