{"id":395885,"date":"2026-04-24T19:24:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/395885\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T19:24:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:24:18","slug":"worst-spring-drought-on-record-grips-us-fueling-wildfires-and-water-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/395885\/","title":{"rendered":"Worst spring drought on record grips US, fueling wildfires and water worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8hetnj004u27p6hyeaclim@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Drought in the continental United States has expanded to its record-highest level for spring, and it\u2019s fueling wildfire and water shortage concerns as the summer\u2019s drying heat fast approaches.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoag6q5y000b3b6s1hy61izx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Varying levels of drought covered 62.78% of the country as of April 21, with the worst of it centered on much of the South, West and Plains. Put another way, dryness in the Lower 48 states has never been this expansive in spring in the history of the <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US Drought Monitor<\/a>, which has data back to 2000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoagaznx000l3b6sflsfze3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southeast in particular is facing unprecedented levels of dryness, with <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/DmData\/DataTables.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">94% of the area<\/a> from Florida to Virginia officially in severe or worse drought, the highest on record. Bone-dry vegetation is already feeding at least 20 large fires across the region as of Wednesday, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifc.gov\/nicc-files\/sitreprt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Interagency Fire Center<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8msjy500163b6qmqr88uq4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year\u2019s footprint of parched conditions is also just 2 to 3% behind the monitor\u2019s record for any time of year, set on September 25, 2012.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo9wm31l00013b6sk5cj7qbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The April data comes on the heels of a March that had the third-worst drought conditions in over 130 years of records, based on another way the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calculates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/national\/time-series\/110\/pdsi\/1\/3\/1895-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long-term dryness<\/a> across the continental US. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/climate-at-a-glance\/national\/time-series\/110\/pdsi\/1\/0\/1895-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two 1934 Dust Bowl-era months<\/a> were worse off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8iokwr000d3b6qyay38bod@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A dearth of rain and snow in the first three months of 2026 has helped stoke this spring\u2019s drought. Precipitation for the continental US as a whole was less than 70% of average from January through March, which ranks as the lowest in records dating to 1895, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/national-climate-202603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NOAA<\/a>. The previous record was set in 1910.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoahg3lh000r3b6sarammqw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            La Ni\u00f1a likely played a role in the lack of rain, especially across the nation\u2019s southern tier, while in the West, storms have tracked farther north this winter and early spring, avoiding the Rockies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoag4lm500023b6sn547o15d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Parched conditions in the Southeast have worsened significantly through winter and early spring, with over 99% of the region experiencing some level of drought.\n    <\/p>\n<p>    \u26c5 Get CNN Weather in your inbox<\/p>\n<p>      The forecast is just the beginning. It\u2019s prompted the first-ever mandatory burn ban in the history of the Georgia Forestry Commission for 91 counties in the lower half of the state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoblgijn00093b6s77lywb1j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That includes Brantley County, about 20 miles west of Brunswick, Georgia, where the Highway 82 Fire has burned at least 54 structures \u2014 including homes \u2014 and forced evacuations this week. More than 99% of the county is now in exceptional drought, the highest category, for the first time on record. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far, forestry commission spokesperson Seth Hawkins told CNN Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobprr0j00003b6s0pifgdeq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brytney Quinn\u2019s family lost everything in the Highway 82 Fire, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobprs3400023b6s1bqwkg5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy house is gone,\u201d Quinn said tearfully in a video she shared with CNN showing the remnants of her home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobprs3400033b6sgm0meoou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After authorities told her to evacuate the area, Quinn grabbed her daughter, her animals and anything else she could and left their house, she said. About 30 minutes later, she checked her surveillance cameras, and the house was in flames, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobprs3400053b6sz9mjonpl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNow we have nothing to go to, but rubbage,\u201d she said. \u201cHow are we going to recover from this?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoag9w6n000j3b6scqpw858c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Crews are also battling a fire in southeastern Georgia\u2019s Clinch County, near the Florida border, named the <a href=\"https:\/\/gatrees.org\/current-wildfire-information-and-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pineland Road Fire<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobl6rrf00043b6s5q6ya8ms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Wednesday declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2026-04-22\/gov-kemp-declares-state-emergency-response-south-georgia-wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state of emergency<\/a> for 91 counties in response to the ongoing fires and drought conditions, freeing up resources and allowing for state National Guard troops to be deployed to the affected areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobl0od300023b6sb9rb06yr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wildfires in Florida are feeding off of vegetation made tinder-dry by a double-whammy of depleted rainfall from La Ni\u00f1a this past winter and a lack of rainfall from tropical storms last fall. Nearly 1,800 wildfires have charred parts of the state so far this year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Forest-Wildfire\/Wildland-Fire\/Current-Wildfire-Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida Forest Service<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8oibig00043b6rm03wi7dp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the West, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/20\/weather\/us-heat-record-march-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unprecedented March heat wave<\/a> made worse by planet-warming pollution also further depleted the dismal snowpack from a winter filled with more blue skies than snowflakes. Colorado\u2019s state climate center <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.colostate.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2026\/04\/02\/mountain-snowpack-should-be-peaking-around-now-this-year-its-almost-gone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in early April<\/a>, \u201cThis has been the worst year for Colorado snowpack in recorded history.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo92kv1l00073b6sjtw5qny1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s raising concerns about water shortages as many western states rely on melted snowpack to feed reservoirs and rivers ahead of the drier summer months. That includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/13\/climate\/snow-drought-colorado-river-negotiations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already-shrinking Colorado River<\/a>, which provides water to tens of millions of people in seven Southwest states.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ap26107779271453.jpg\" alt=\"Philip Anderson walks across a dry stock pond in Walden, Colorado, on March 31.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1670\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8u41ia00013b6sat4zriai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Minimum inflow from the Colorado River into Lake Powell over the coming months is expected to be just 29% of its historical average, and one of the lowest on record for the reservoir along the border between Arizona and Utah, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/newsroom\/news-release\/5326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bureau of Reclamation<\/a> forecast. Low water levels at Powell will also impact Lake Mead \u2014 the nation\u2019s largest reservoir \u2014 downstream, as well as its hydropower operations at the Hoover Dam. Reduced water releases from Powell could be a significant hit to Hoover\u2019s hydropower, cutting it 40% as early as this fall, according to the agency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8q5vyx000b3b6r2equiumw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wildfires nationwide had burned more than 1.7 million acres as of April 17, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifc.gov\/fire-information\/nfn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Interagency Fire Center<\/a>. That\u2019s nearly twice the average acreage burned by that date for the previous 10 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/gacc.nifc.gov\/sacc\/predictive\/intelligence\/NationalYTDbyStateandAgency.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A big chunk<\/a> of that was Nebraska\u2019s Morrill Fire, which became the <a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.wildfire.gov\/incident-information\/nenes-morrill-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest in the state\u2019s history<\/a> in March after strong winds caused it to spread rapidly across over 640,000 acres of drought-starved vegetation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8rq356000l3b6r9cw9u80h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fire concerns are expected to grow more dire in the West over the next few months. Above-normal fire activity is forecast to expand from the Plains to the Four Corners states into Northern California and parts of Oregon, Washington and Idaho from May through July, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifc.gov\/nicc\/predictive-services\/outlooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">outlook from the fire center<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8rxcaj000q3b6r7sv9dveh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Florida is also expected to face more above-average fire activity through at least June, when the summer\u2019s rainy season ramps up to bring relieving downpours.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8s4rz8000s3b6rtytb8s9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the shorter-term, the South is expected to see some much-needed rainfall over the next week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo8sanfx00133b6rksic5vc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Drought-suffering locations from eastern Oklahoma to Tennessee, northern Alabama and northern Georgia could see 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, but that will be just a drop in the bucket. Parts of the region would need to pick up 20 inches or more of rain within the next three months to dig out of the current drought, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/drought-recovery\/current\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NOAA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobcbbmr000e3b6snb2yat2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Portions of the central and southern Rockies need over 10 inches of precipitation to end the drought within three months.
