It’s set to be an emotional time on EastEnders this week, with Nigel Bates sadly passing away after battling with dementia<\/a>. The beloved figure has been supported by his loved ones, and an old friend will even make their way back to Walford.<\/p>\n

Nigel returned to East London on Christmas Eve in 2024 after an absence of 26 years, and reconnected with Phil Mitchell. It was later revealed that he had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, with wife Julie arriving in Albert Square in July.<\/p>\n

This upcoming week will see Nigel sadly pass away, however, bringing an end to Paul Bradley’s long association with the BBC soap<\/a>. As part of the storyline, Grant Mitchell will make another comeback<\/a> as he spends some valuable time with his close friend.<\/p>\n

With Bradley having debuted as Nigel in 1992, it’s set to be an emotional week for all involved, and Ross Kemp – who portrays Grant – shared that viewers would be satisfied with how Nigel’s final moments are depicted. <\/p>\n

“What makes it so special and impactful is the performances, particularly by Paul, Karen [Henthorn], and Steve [McFadden], and that the story has played out in real time,” says Kemp, who first played Grant in 1990.<\/p>\n

“Paul did an amazing job showing the many different layers of how dementia affects a human being and the people around them – I think that will really resonate with many people,” he added.<\/p>\n

Upon his return to Walford, Grant learns that his brother Phil has been reluctant to visit Nigel in recent weeks. Despite initially criticising his brother, Grant begins to learn that Phil has struggled to cope with the spectre of Nigel’s death.<\/p>\n

“Initially, Grant is very angry with Phil,” says Kemp. “He believes Phil has been selfish and has abandoned Nigel by placing him in a care home. Over time, though, he begins to realise that Phil may be struggling himself. <\/p>\n

“Eventually, the brothers sit down and have a heartfelt conversation and clear the air. These scenes were long and intense, and it was brilliant to film them with Steve,” noted the actor, who last appeared as part of the soap’s 40th anniversary.<\/p>\n

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast. <\/p>\n
