{"id":39957,"date":"2025-09-24T03:00:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T03:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/39957\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T03:00:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T03:00:11","slug":"auckland-airport-opens-largest-airfield-expansion-since-its-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/39957\/","title":{"rendered":"Auckland Airport opens largest airfield expansion since its construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Auckland Airport has unveiled its largest airfield expansion since the airport&#8217;s construction more than 50 years ago, adding space equivalent to 23 rugby fields to its apron, taxiway, and runway network.<\/p>\n<p>The new northern apron expansion included six aircraft stands \u2013 five fully-serviced with jet fuel and electricity connections and one unserviced \u2013 all able to accommodate both widebody and narrowbody jets.<\/p>\n<p>It provided parking for up to 11 aircraft and was designed to ease pressure during peak periods by allowing planes with longer layovers to move off terminal gates.<\/p>\n<p>While the stands were not currently linked to the international terminal via airbridges, provision had been made to convert them when required in future.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion would also improve cargo operations, with a new air side road linking directly to the airport&#8217;s developing cargo precinct. <\/p>\n<p>Auckland Airport handles more than $26 billion in trade, with this number expected to rise to more than $41 billion annually.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the $465 million project began in 2019, paused during the pandemic, and resumed in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>The project involved extensive earthworks and concrete pouring with a focus on sustainability, with more than 100,000 tonnes of old runway concrete recycled to reduce emissions and truck movements.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/auckland-airport-chief-executive-carrie-hurihanganui-airfiel-AYAJB7W25BHO3IKVBZZLYH3AYI.jpg\" alt=\"Auckland Airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui, Airfield Programme Manager Jason Dardis, and Project Director Geraint Francis. \" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">Auckland Airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui, Airfield Programme Manager Jason Dardis, and Project Director Geraint Francis.
