{"id":400366,"date":"2026-04-27T19:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/400366\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T19:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:30:08","slug":"three-killed-in-crash-involving-car-and-tanker-desert-road-state-highway-1-closed-from-rangipo-to-waiouru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/400366\/","title":{"rendered":"Three killed in crash involving car and tanker, Desert Road State Highway 1 closed from Rangipo to Wai\u014duru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui Area Commander Inspector Neil Forlong said the loss of three lives was heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur initial inquiries show the car has likely crossed the centre line just before the crash, but why that occurred is a focus of our investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">A helicopter was sent to help search the area as there were initial fears that a fourth person had been in the vehicle, but that had been ruled out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Forlong acknowledged the fast response from emergency crews \u201cwho faced a tough scene\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cCrashes like this are devastating for the families involved, and the community and police will continue to support those affected by this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The Serious Crash Unit has completed a scene examination and the road is expected to reopen this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">A Fire and Emergency spokesman confirmed the service had attended the crash but referred queries to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">A detour is in place between Wai\u014duru and Rangipo, the NZ Transport Agency website says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Northbound drivers are being sent down SH49, before turning right onto SH4, right onto SH47, right onto SH46 and left back onto SH1, with southbound drivers following the same detour in reverse.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SH1 Waiouru to Rangipo &#8211; Desert Road, Waikato &#8211; CRASH &#8211; 0:10AM, Tuesday 28 April<br \/>Due to a Crash, the State Highway is CLOSED between Rangipo and Waiouru (Desert Road).
