Dietitian Explains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-d53d0d\" class=\"body-graf\">Once relegated to the dark little corner of outdated health foods, cottage cheese is now fully back in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b63424\" class=\"body-graf\">It&#8217;s naturally packed with filling protein and can be topped with your favorite sweet or savory ingredients. Cottage cheese is also a culinary chameleon that can be a replacement for higher-calorie cheeses and spreads, or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/recipes\/high-protein-scrambled-eggs-cottage-cheese-t298391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mix it into scrambled eggs<\/a> to boost the protein even more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-37223d\" class=\"body-graf\">Cottage cheese is, indeed, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/cottage-cheese-benefits-rcna97938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">very healthy food<\/a>. But does that mean it&#8217;s OK to eat cottage cheese every single day?<\/p>\n<p>Is it Healthy to Eat Cottage Cheese Every Day?<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d615de\" class=\"body-graf\">The benefits of eating cottage cheese are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/greek-yogurt-vs-cottage-cheese-rcna169340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">similar to those of eating high-protein yogurts<\/a>, says Natalie Rizzo, a registered dietitian and TODAY nutrition editor. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b10215\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;It&#8217;s high in protein, high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/calcium-foods-rcna200279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calcium<\/a> and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/probiotic-foods-rcna30830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">some probiotics<\/a>,&#8221; she explains. But that doesn&#8217;t mean all cottage cheese is equally good for you. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-02dda9\" class=\"body-graf\">As with yogurt, some varieties of cottage cheese will be a little higher in protein than others. And flavored cottage cheeses typically have added sugar, which should be kept to a minimum, Rizzo says \u2014\u00a0ideally less than 6 grams a serving, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/dietitian-tip-limit-added-sugar-rcna235538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TODAY.com previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-591979\" class=\"body-graf\">There is one major difference between cottage cheese and healthy yogurts, like Greek yogurt and skyr, Rizzo explains, and that&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/is-salt-bad-for-you-rcna214960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sodium content<\/a> in cottage cheese.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f8f0f0\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;That&#8217;s the one thing you have to watch for,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b1114e\" class=\"body-graf\">For most people, it will still be fine to eat cottage cheese every day. &#8220;But if you have high blood pressure, that&#8217;s really when you have to worry about sodium,&#8221; Rizzo says. &#8220;And then maybe cottage cheese is not for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-784a51\" class=\"body-graf\">That doesn&#8217;t mean you can never eat cottage cheese, but it does mean that you need to be a little more mindful of how often you&#8217;re eating it and what else you&#8217;re having during the day.<\/p>\n<p>If You Want to Eat Cottage Cheese Daily&#8230;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4c552a\" class=\"body-graf\">For most people, cottage cheese is a healthy food that you can eat as often as every day. But there are still come considerations to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Keep an Eye on Sodium <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6a0c00\" class=\"body-graf\">Unlike Greek yogurt, cottage cheese contains sodium. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a1ce9a\" class=\"body-graf\">While that&#8217;s not an issue for everyone, those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/heart-healthy-foods-rcna122367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high blood pressure<\/a> or other heart health concerns may need to limit the amount of cottage cheese they eat, Rizzo says. You&#8217;ll also need to be mindful of what else you&#8217;re eating the cottage cheese with, like crackers, which also contain sodium, she says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-379ef2\" class=\"body-graf\">Alternately, there are some brands of low-sodium cottage cheese, which you can seek out, Rizzo says, but they can be harder to find in grocery stores.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0cf062\" class=\"body-graf\">Of course, compared to other high-salt foods in the typical American diet (particularly highly processed foods), cottage cheese is definitely a &#8220;lesser evil,&#8221; Rizzo says. But it is still something to keep an eye on for some folks.<\/p>\n<p>Limit Added Sugars<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0b17a8\" class=\"body-graf\">A lot of the cottage cheese you&#8217;ll find in grocery stores is plain, which is the healthiest option, Rizzo says. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bc5e27\" class=\"body-graf\">That allows you to use it in recipes or add your own sweet or savory toppings, like fresh fruit, nuts and seeds, or roasted vegetables and a soft boiled egg.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-468baa\" class=\"body-graf\">Rizzo likes to make a cottage cheese bowl with Mediterranean-inspired flavors along with slices of cucumber and tomato. She also likes to make a whipped cottage cheese dip by blending it in a food processor with herbs and lemon juice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6d5a87\" class=\"body-graf\">When possible, it&#8217;s better to avoid flavored cottage cheeses, which typically contain added sugar. Flavored cottage cheese typically contains fewer grams of added sugar than flavored Greek yogurt. But it&#8217;s still generally recommended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/signs-youre-eating-too-much-sugar-rcna205321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">minimize the amount of added sugar<\/a> you eat in a day, as TODAY.com explained previously.<\/p>\n<p>Choose the Right Fat Content for You<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-770c5c\" class=\"body-graf\">As with yogurt, cottage cheese also comes with different fat contents, including nonfat, low-fat and full fat (typically 4% or more).<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-626536\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">With more fat comes a creamier, richer texture and taste, but also more calories and saturated fat. For most people who eat cottage cheese frequently, low-fat cottage cheese is a good middle ground, Rizzo says.
