April 28 (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs (GS<\/a>) has removed access to Anthropic’s AI models for\u00a0its bankers in Hong Kong, a source with direct knowledge \u200csaid.<\/p>\n

Employees of the U.S. bank in the Chinese territory were previously able \u200cto interact with Anthropic’s Claude through an internal AI platform but in recent weeks they \u200bhave no longer had access, according to the source.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times first reported the removal of access to Claude on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n

Goldman’s move came as a result of the U.S. bank taking a strict interpretation of \u200cits contract with Anthropic following \u2060a consultation with the company, concluding that the bank’s employees in Hong Kong should not be able to use any \u2060Anthropic products, the report said.<\/p>\n

Other mainstream models such as Gemini and ChatGPT were still available on the internal platform, the source told Reuters. They declined to be \u200bnamed because \u200bthey were not authorised to speak to \u200bthe media.<\/p>\n

Goldman Sachs declined to \u200ccomment. Anthropic did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.<\/p>\n

While AI models like ChatGPT and Claude, built by U.S. firms, are prohibited in mainland China, Hong Kong has mostly remained outside these controls, with usage limits set by U.S. companies themselves.<\/p>\n

Anthropic’s spokesperson told the FT that its Claude models had never \u200cbeen officially “supported” in Hong Kong but declined to \u200bcomment further.<\/p>\n

The decision did not extend to \u200bcontracts with other AI vendors such \u200bas OpenAI<\/a>, the newspaper added.<\/p>\n

The Hong Kong government and Hong \u200cKong Monetary Authority did not immediately \u200brespond to a \u200bReuters request for comment.<\/p>\n

Goldman Sachs’ Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti said in February that the bank was working with Anthropic to develop AI-powered agents \u200baimed at automating a \u200cwidening range of internal functions.<\/p>\n
