Even though Gerard Butler<\/a> starred in his highest-grossing live-action movie \u2014 the How to Train Your Dragon remake<\/a> \u2014 only last year, he’s been having a rather mediocre run at the box office of late. His most successful movie since 2020, aside from How to Train Your Dragon, remains the action-thriller Plane<\/a>, which grossed roughly $75 million worldwide. Three other films \u2014 Kandahar<\/a>, Last Seen Alive<\/a>, and Copshop<\/a> \u2014 failed to crack the $10 million mark. The biggest blow came earlier this year, when Butler’s $90 million sci-fi sequel Greenland 2: Migration<\/a> grossed just $45 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

This was lower than the $52 million worldwide haul of the first Greenland<\/a> movie, which was released in 2020. Produced on a reported budget of $35 million, Greenland wasn’t a theatrical money-spinner, but it proved to be massively successful on PVOD and streaming platforms like Prime Video, breaking into the Top 10 charts on several of them. This was the biggest reason why a sequel was green-lit. Also directed by the original film’s Ric Roman Waugh<\/a>, Greenland 2 ramped up the scale and was positioned as a major tent-pole for the struggling Lionsgate, which has since bounced back with the record-breaking Michael Jackson biopic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘Greenland 2’ Isn’t the Only Gerard Butler Sequel Doing Well on Streaming<\/p>\n

However, mediocre reviews and a general disinterest among audiences led to Greenland 2 bombing at the box office. This was Waugh’s first of two flops in as many months, the other being the Jason Statham<\/a>-led action-thriller Shelter<\/a>. Greenland 2 holds a 49% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The world ends more with a whimper in Greenland 2: Migration compared to its predecessor’s big bang thrills, but Gerard Butler’s sturdy star power keeps this continuation reasonably compelling.” Following its poor theatrical performance, the movie appears to have found an audience on streaming. According to FlixPatrol, Greenland 2 was among the most-watched films on the global Prime Video chart this week. At the same time, another Butler-led sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera<\/a>, topped the global HBO Max leaderboard. Released in 2025, Den of Thieves 2 fell short of its predecessor’s box-office benchmark, but narrowly outgrossed Greenland 2 globally.<\/p>\n
