Its demise was rapid and is commonly attributed to hunting during the colonial era, habitat loss and competition for grazing areas with livestock.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z600283b6qmkcs3nqd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a clear example of an extinction that is our fault, and that we have the technology now, and can develop the technology within the next several years, to reverse,\u201d said Colossal chief science officer Beth Shapiro.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z600293b6qii8kxngj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The antelope is Colossal\u2019s first foray into bovids, a group of animals with cloven hoofs and horns that also includes cattle, goats and buffalo. It is also Colossal\u2019s first project centered on mainland Africa (<a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/dodo-de-extinction-mauritius-spc-intl-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the company\u2019s dodo project involves work in Mauritius<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002a3b6qcrg8tvun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Efforts began in 2024. The biotech company extracted DNA from a bluebuck specimen in the Swedish Museum of Natural History to piece together the species\u2019 genome. From this, scientists have deciphered which genetic variants express the antelope\u2019s key physical traits, including its blue-gray pelt, white patch in front of the eyes and long curved horns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002b3b6q0ietlr8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colossal says its analysis confirmed the sable and roan antelope are the bluebuck\u2019s closest genetic relatives. It is using the roan as a cellular surrogate, editing roan DNA to bring it closer to the bluebuck\u2019s appearance \u2014 a process that is underway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002c3b6qjqo7h39x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The project will use a roan antelope as a surrogate mother for the laboratory-grown embryo. The company has already acquired roan for this purpose. The gestation period is nine months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002d3b6q6yevj56r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CEO said he anticipates the birth of a specimen in \u201cthe coming years\u201d rather than decades. Colossal said the bluebuck would require more gene editing than the dire wolf, but less than several of its other projects. For the dire wolf, Colossal said it made 20 edits in 14 genes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002e3b6q6b9y7u97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamm said Colossal was announcing the project now as it has achieved a series of breakthroughs that he believes could apply to endangered antelope species such as the critically endangered hirola. \u201cWe felt like we were doing a disservice to antelope conservation by sitting on (them),\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002f3b6qm4twyegm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One breakthrough is the successful ovum pickup of roan antelope. Ovum pickup (OPU) is a method of egg collection and a key step for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Another breakthrough is the creation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from roan antelope \u2014 reprogrammed adult cells returned to a stem-cell-like state, which can be turned into other tissue types. Colossal says both are world firsts for roan antelopes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002g3b6qapbeafj4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve made enough progress in technologies that can be now immediately applied,\u201d Lamm said. \u201cWe\u2019re very happy for people to contact us if they want to learn the protocols that we\u2019ve used to make these iPSCs, for example.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002h3b6q3buhqh6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are 29 endangered antelope species worldwide, including the critically endangered dama gazelle, hirola and addax, all native to Africa. Many populations are shrinking due to habitat loss, among other factors. For some endangered species, population fragmentation and a lack of genetic diversity is a concern for their long-term prospects.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-1008546316.jpg\" alt=\"A roan antelope photographed in a Belgian wildlife park, 2018. The species is a close genetic relative of the bluebuck and is being used as a genetic surrogate by Colossal Biosciences.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3395\" width=\"4887\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002i3b6qlw8u8fji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. David Mallon, visiting professor at the Department of Natural Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University, and emeritus chair of the antelope specialist group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature\/Specialist Survival Commission, who\u2019s not connected with the project, described it as \u201can extremely interesting development\u201d and said the bluebuck was \u201cthe obvious species to choose from among the antelopes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002j3b6qo5bxu9w6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But he queried the value of the venture to ongoing conservation efforts: \u201cI think there\u2019s a question of how much of this would be seen as a conservation priority, and I think the answer is \u2018not a lot.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002k3b6qyvjet8n4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c(It\u2019s) a very interesting scientific experiment, but there are far higher conservation priorities to be solved,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002l3b6qfpomk3k5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA huge amount of money is being spent on these operations \u2014 which are of clearly great scientific interest \u2014 but a lot of people I think would feel that the money would be better spent on trying to prevent some species in big trouble from really going extinct.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002m3b6qu698qt22@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent successes in antelope conservation have come through captive breeding and reintroduction, he added. These include the Arabian oryx, which returned to the Arabian Peninsula in 1982, and the scimitar-horned oryx, which was declared extinct in the wild in 2000 but was successfully reintroduced to Chad. Its population has grown so much the IUCN upgraded the oryx from critically endangered to endangered in 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-1189658197.jpg\" alt=\"A herd of Arabian oryx photographed in the United Arab Emirates in 2019.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1679\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2209526012.jpg\" alt=\"A scimitar-horned oryx and two infants in Morocco, 20205. The species was declared extinct in the wild before being bred in captivity and successfully reintroduced.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002n3b6q4mx2mx5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The antelope specialist also queried whether Colossal\u2019s bluebuck would have a natural, functional ecosystem to return to.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002o3b6qcjxcmksj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awf.org\/wildlife-conservation\/roan-antelope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">African Wildlife Foundation<\/a>, the roan antelope, for example, has lost large parts of its range through human habitation and agricultural expansion. Even in protected national parks in Kenya and South Africa it has struggled in recent years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002p3b6q1hb8x1vt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamm said, as with its other projects, the company is building a collaboration with conservationists, private landowners, government stakeholders and educators to forge a reintroduction plan for Colossal\u2019s bluebuck.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002q3b6qzj2p4r71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colossal has not made public where it plans to reintroduce species, though Lamm said it would be part of the bluebuck\u2019s historic range in Southern Africa, and is working with the Endangered Wildlife Trust.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002r3b6qh7qepaai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Colossal refers to the project as \u201cde-extinction,\u201d critics have pointed out that is technically impossible. Following the company\u2019s dire wolf announcement in 2025, Dusko Ilic, professor of stem cell science at King\u2019s College London, called the animal a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12181955\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201csynthetic proxy,\u201d<\/a> designed to mimic the dire wolf\u2019s physical traits. An animal\u2019s learned behaviors and ecological niche were another matter, and he described \u201cde-extinction\u201d as an \u201cillusion.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002s3b6q7w4v8y03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shapiro herself <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/01\/16\/science\/colossal-de-extinction-funding-resurrection-science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN in 2024<\/a>, \u201conce a species is lost, it\u2019s gone.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dire-wolf-pups-first-birthday-digvidimage1.jpg\" alt=\"Two pups genetically engineered to resemble the dire wolf.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002t3b6q6t1zn4cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Skepticism has not stopped Colossal Bioscience from attracting a swarm of investors, including celebrities such as director Peter Jackson, socialite Paris Hilton, former professional football player Tom Brady and professional golfer Tiger Woods. The company, which was founded in 2021, received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-17\/startup-working-to-bring-back-dodo-bird-raises-120-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$555 million<\/a> in funding by September 2025, according to Bloomberg.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002v3b6qfodjlmm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Colossal was founded by Lamm and Harvard geneticist George Church in 2021, when the start-up announced its plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2021\/09\/13\/world\/woolly-mammoth-resurrect-deextinction-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bring back the mammoth in some form<\/a> by genetically modifying an Asian elephant. Lamm told CNN at the time it aimed to have the first calves within four to six years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z6002w3b6qkeuacn3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company has since announced similar efforts to resurrect approximations of the thylacine, better known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2022\/08\/16\/world\/tasmanian-tiger-thylacine-deextinction-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tasmanian tiger,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2023\/01\/31\/world\/dodo-bring-back-from-extinction-colossal-scn\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dodo,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/07\/09\/science\/giant-moa-colossal-biosciences\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the giant moa<\/a>, a flightless bird that once lived in New Zealand.  In 2025, it revealed what it described as the birth of <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/04\/07\/science\/dire-wolf-de-extinction-cloning-colossal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three dire wolf pups<\/a> created by altering the genetic makeup of the gray wolf. However, it did not first make that project public.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z7002x3b6q3ld2gl1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamm argued that with each \u201cde-extinction\u201d announcement the company created a \u201chalo effect of awareness of biodiversity loss,\u201d and hopes to shift public opinion on conservation needs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmojxm3z7002y3b6qrvb2ndcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDe-extinction is not the answer.
