Following Star Wars’ return to the big screen in May with The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise will add another exciting entry to its big-screen slate in Star Wars: Starfighter. This film will bring Ryan Gosling into the galaxy far, far away to play what he calls the bravest character he has ever embodied<\/a>, taking the spotlight under director Shawn Levy in a story set outside the main Skywalker Saga timeline. Alongside a cast filled to the brim with A-list talent, Gosling and the team are expected to deliver a new look at this franchise, as his character protects and trains a young boy while navigating a post-First Order universe.<\/p>\n

While plot details are still being kept under wraps for the foreseeable future, reports have teased that Starfighter will deliver some of the best action sequences in franchise history. Action legend Tom Cruise even helped film a new lightsaber battle<\/a>, which Levy confirmed will make the final cut of the movie when it is released. As the new movie inches closer to its release, which is still about 13 months from now, new information is being revealed on some specific sequences audiences should look forward to seeing unfold.<\/p>\n

The final issue of Star Wars Insider (per Star Wars News Net<\/a>) reveals new insight into some of the special effects and scenes that will be in the 2027 film Star Wars: Starfighter. According to the report, the special effects unit finished work on the film in December 2025, when principal photography initially wrapped. Special effects supervisor Dominic Tuohy compared the work with speeders on this movie to past films, noting that the team “did a speeder that flies through canyons really fast” in a way that has not been done in the past. Explaining how the shot was filmed, this process helped give the crew “a much more fluid look” than anything seen before:<\/p>\n

“We did a speeder that flies through canyons really fast, which is an iconic Star Wars image, but we did it in a way that hasn’t been done before on any other Star Wars show. Imagine a long pole, with a cable connected in the middle and counterweight on either side, like a seesaw. On one side of the cable, we put the speeder and the actor, and on the other side we had our counterweight. With all the balances correct, we were able to turn and rotate the speeder, and that gave us a much more fluid look than using a hydraulic platform.”<\/p>\n

He also explained how the team used a “wavespeeder rig on a boat” and brought it out into the sea with the actors, which could have also been done with blue-screen technology. He made it clear that he and the team wanted to shoot on location when they could so that they could “get the imperfections” of nature in the shots:<\/p>\n

“We put a wavespeeder rig on a boat and took it out to sea along with the actors. We could have shot the sequence on a stage in a bluescreen environment, but on location, you get the imperfections of the wind. When you’re out at sea, one minute the wind is going this way, and all of a sudden it blows from behind and moves your costume in a different way.”<\/p>\n

Floor supervisor Richard Cheal also spoke about another scene, in which a “huge explosion” takes place. He noted how the team “tested the pyrotechnics on the stage” to figure out the safest way to make it happen for the cast, crew, and stunt performers. Needing to know “air pressure and how big the flames were going to go,” this was put through multiple tests to see “how much fire [they] could put in there:”<\/p>\n

“There’s a huge explosion in one scene. We tested the pyrotechnics on the stage to work out the safe zone, not just for the cast and crew but also for the stunt performers, who we work very closely with. We needed to know air pressure, how big the flames were going to go… We tried that out four or five times before showing anyone, then we tested again to see how wide we could go and how much fire we could put in there.”<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Star Wars seems intent on delivering much of the classic action that has been missing from the big screen for nearly a decade. While this will start in May 2026 with The Mandalorian and Grogu<\/a>, Starfighter will offer a different kind of action, centered on thrilling starship battles, speeder chases, and the incomparable lightsaber choreography that has made Star Wars one of the best sci-fi franchises in history.
