India, meanwhile, is accelerating its own network of agreements after agreeing one with the European Union earlier this year and with Britain last year.<\/p>\n
That urgency isn\u2019t abstract. Exporters in both countries are operating in an era of volatile freight routes, sudden policy shifts, and punitive tariffs that can appear or disappear through the stroke of a pen.<\/p>\n
The value of a trade agreement, in 2026, is as much about predictability as it is about price.<\/p>\n
On paper, the FTA\u2019s provisions are significant.<\/p>\n
India gets duty-free access for 100% of its exports to New Zealand \u2013 something its industry groups say could help small and medium-sized firms across textiles, leather, gems and jewellery.<\/p>\n

New Zealand exporters, in turn, secured tariff relief on products such as wool, kiwifruit and apples, while wine duties (currently 150%) are set to fall sharply over the next decade.<\/p>\n
The FTA also includes a US$20 billion ($34b) investment commitment from New Zealand over 15 years, and 5000 temporary employment entry visas for Indian professionals.<\/p>\n
In the hallways of the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre the optimism was easy to find \u2013 in the three ministerial speeches India and New Zealand each gave across the business forum, signing ceremony and celebration event, and the all-day conversations with local businesses and officials.<\/p>\n
A nation of about 1.4 billion people with an economy of more than US$4 trillion in nominal GDP was fully engaged and meaningful friends with a nation of only 5.4 million with an economy of about US$280b.<\/p>\n
Many described it as \u201cforward-looking\u201d, designed to broaden co-operation and open fresh opportunities for firms looking to diversify their markets.<\/p>\n
Still, anyone treating the signing as a happy and tidy win for everyone is missing the politics that made these negotiations so long and so stop-start.<\/p>\n
In New Zealand, parts of the coalition Government have already questioned whether the FTA delivers meaningful market access for dairy \u2013 our top export \u2013 even as it opens its market more fully in other areas.<\/p>\n
There are also legitimate questions about labour-market settings.<\/p>\n

Specialised visa pathways and expanded work rights can be a net positive when they target genuine skill shortages and are matched with strong compliance. But they can also become political lightning rods.<\/p>\n
The dairy carve-out in the FTA captures the challenge.<\/p>\n
India has agreed to allow New Zealand to send dairy ingredients duty-free for processing to then be re-exported. Indian dairy farmers and co-operatives will want assurance that any \u201cintermediate goods\u201d aren\u2019t used to circumvent rules and leak into their domestic market. That requires prevention mechanisms that are actively enforced.<\/p>\n
This agreement also lands amid India\u2019s broader trade diplomacy, including difficult conversations with the United States, which views the subcontinent as a geopolitically important link with China, Russia and emerging economies.<\/p>\n
