The water runs five to six times saltier than the ocean, the shoreline crackles with mineral crust, and only a handful of hardy creatures manage to call it home. <\/p>\n<p>Now scientists can add one more name to that very short list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A tiny roundworm living in Utah\u2019s Great Salt Lake has now been confirmed as a species never before described by science.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say its ability to survive in the lake\u2019s extreme salt levels not only expands what scientists know can live there, but also raises new questions about how it arrived and what role it plays in a fragile, bird-supporting ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Finding Diplolaimelloides woaabi<\/p>\n<p>Inside hard, lumpy microbialites, rock-like mounds built by microbes, on the lakebed, slimy algal mats held the first worms recovered in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>From those mat scrapings, Michael S. Werner, Ph.D., a biologist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utah.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Utah<\/a> described a roundworm that matched no known species.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Werner\u2019s lab, the animals stayed in the top few inches of mats, and they vanished deeper in the mounds.<\/p>\n<p>That tight hideout suggests the worms depend on microbial communities for food, making their presence sensitive to changes in the mats.<\/p>\n<p>After years of close work, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/frozen-worm-comes-back-to-life-after-46000-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worm<\/a> received a formal name, Diplolaimelloides woaabi, in the paper.<\/p>\n<p>To choose woaabi, researchers worked with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, a federally recognized tribe whose ancestral homelands include the Great Salt Lake region.<\/p>\n<p>That choice links a new nematode, a tiny roundworm with a simple tube-like gut, to a language rooted in the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Names can signal respect, and they also make it harder to treat the lake\u2019s living community as an anonymous sample jar.<\/p>\n<p>Few animals survive<\/p>\n<p>Until discovering Diplolaimelloides woaabi, only brine shrimp and brine flies had been confirmed as native animals thriving in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/utah-water-science-center\/science\/great-salt-lake-elevations-and-areal-extent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lake\u2019s saltiest bays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With no outlet to the sea, water evaporates while dissolved minerals stay behind, driving salinity upward.<\/p>\n<p>Brine shrimp and brine flies turn algae into food that fuels huge waves of migratory birds across the West.<\/p>\n<p>Adding a third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/animal-swarms-are-revealing-a-new-kind-of-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">animal<\/a> group forces ecologists to rethink what else might be living on the lakebed.<\/p>\n<p>Two populations appear<\/p>\n<p>Genetic checks showed the lake\u2019s worms did not all match perfectly, hinting at hidden variation within the same muddy habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Because many roundworms look alike at this scale, small DNA differences can mark separate lineages even when bodies seem identical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell distinguishing characteristics, but genetically we can see that there are at least two populations out there,\u201d Werner said.<\/p>\n<p>Sorting that out will take more sampling around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/prehistoric-canoes-found-in-the-us-lake-mendota-are-older-than-the-pyramids\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lake<\/a>, because a second species would change the whole count.<\/p>\n<p>Salt stress and survival<\/p>\n<p>Life in salty water pulls moisture from cells, so any animal that stays alive must manage water loss constantly.<\/p>\n<p>In this group of roundworms shared by Diplolaimelloides woaabi, a tough outer skin and careful control of body salts help keep internal tissues from drying.<\/p>\n<p>Measured under about 1\/16 inch long, the species stayed slender enough to slip through bacterial films on the mats.<\/p>\n<p>Even with those defenses, extremes have limits, and rising salinity could still push the worm beyond what its cells can handle.<\/p>\n<p>From ocean to Utah<\/p>\n<p>Most close relatives of this worm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/killer-sea-sponge-species-carnivorous-cladorhizid-traps-and-devours-live-animals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">live<\/a> near coasts, yet it survives 4,200 feet (1,280 meters) up and more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) from ocean shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>Migratory <a href=\"https:\/\/real.mtak.hu\/174038\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">waterbirds<\/a> can carry tiny aquatic life between lakes, sometimes hitchhiking on feathers, feet, or swallowed mud.<\/p>\n<p>Long before humans, a North American inland sea and later freshwater <a href=\"https:\/\/geology.utah.gov\/popular\/great-salt-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lake Bonneville<\/a> remade Utah\u2019s waters between about 30,000 and 13,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers explained that two main ideas could account for the presence of Diplolaimelloides woaabi, but each requires an unusual chain of events to be true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cff2.earth.com\/uploads\/2026\/02\/01115335\/new-creature_Diplolaimelloides-woaabi_Great-Salt-Lake_PMC_1m.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/new-creature_Diplolaimelloides-woaabi_Great-Salt-Lake_PMC_1s.webp.webp\" alt=\"Terminal head region of the new animal species found in the Great Salt Lake, Diplolaimelloides woaabi sp. nov. Click image to enlarge.Males are missing<\/p>\n<p>Across many lake samples, females dominated the worm population so strongly that the imbalance became part of the mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Male anatomy matters for identifying species, so a shortage of males can slow the work of confirming who is who.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we sample out there on the lake and bring them back in the lab, we get less than 1% males,\u201d Werner said.<\/p>\n<p>Such swings suggest the lake environment filters which worms thrive, and lab conditions may hide that pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Food at the surface<\/p>\n<p>Diplolaimelloides woaabi feeds on bacteria growing thickly at the surface, staying close to the lakebed\u2019s main food source.<\/p>\n<p>By grazing on microbes, it may turn that growth into animal biomass that other lake residents can use.<\/p>\n<p>Under high magnification, microbes clung to its outer skin, suggesting a surface coat that can shape who sticks around.<\/p>\n<p>If the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/strange-microbial-bedfellows-offer-clues-to-how-complex-life-evolved-microbial-mat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mat<\/a> community thins or dries, the worm loses both food and cover, making its numbers a quick signal.<\/p>\n<p>Lessons from Diplolaimelloides woaabi<\/p>\n<p>Ecologists often treat nematodes as a bioindicator, a living marker of environmental change, because their populations respond fast to stress.<\/p>\n<p>Falling water has exposed <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/water\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pwat.0000100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">microbialite reefs<\/a>, whose surface mats are estimated to contribute about 30 percent of the lake\u2019s primary productivity.<\/p>\n<p>When those mats bleach, the base of the food chain shrinks, and the worm\u2019s presence could track that decline early.<\/p>\n<p>Used carefully, counts of this species could guide restoration targets, but only long-term surveys will show what normal looks like.<\/p>\n<p>Finding Diplolaimelloides woaabi in Great Salt Lake microbialites shows that even extreme habitats can hide animals with real ecological jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Future work can test how it reached Utah and whether its numbers move early when water levels and salinity change.<\/p>\n<p>The study is published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/reference-global.com\/article\/10.2478\/jofnem-2025-0048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Journal of Nematology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n<p>Like what you read? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/subscribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Subscribe to our newsletter<\/a> for engaging articles, exclusive content, and the latest updates.<\/p>\n<p>Check us out on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/earthsnap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">EarthSnap<\/a>, a free app brought to you by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/author\/eralls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Eric Ralls<\/a> and Earth.com.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Utah\u2019s Great Salt Lake doesn\u2019t exactly look like a place teeming with life.
