This season, New York theater has traded boardrooms for an emergency room and a fine-dining prep kitchen. Three actors from the HBO hospital drama <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/the-pitt-hbo-max\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Pitt\u201d<\/a> are appearing onstage, joined by three actors from the FX restaurant dramedy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/08\/dining\/the-bear-fx-hulu.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Bear.\u201d<\/a> Earlier this season, Jean Smart, a star of the HBO comedy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/04\/arts\/television\/hacks-final-season.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHacks,\u201d<\/a> appeared in the one-woman show <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/12\/theater\/call-me-izzy-review-jean-smart.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCall Me Izzy,\u201d<\/a> and now her co-star Carl Clemons-Hopkins is making his Broadway debut in \u201cThe Balusters.\u201d And actors from HBO\u2019s sumptuous historical drama \u201cThe Gilded Age\u201d? They\u2019re glittering all across Broadway. That\u2019s a lot of Emmy contenders gunning for Tonys and Obies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Many of these actors are theater veterans, others are newcomers. All have to contend with audiences who know them best for their screen roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">After being heckled at a performance of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/26\/theater\/just-in-time-review-darin-groff.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cJust in Time,\u201d<\/a> Isa Briones, an actress from \u201cThe Pitt,\u201d posted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ThePitt\/comments\/1sj2xr7\/isa_briones_ig_story_on_theater_etiquette_41125\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">on Instagram<\/a>: \u201cDon\u2019t talk to me onstage and don\u2019t call me Dr. Santos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a new problem,\u201d said her \u201cPitt\u201d co-star Patrick Ball, who is appearing in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/06\/theater\/becky-shaw-review-alden-ehrenreich.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBecky Shaw\u201d<\/a> on Broadway. \u201cThere\u2019s a real luxury in anonymity.\u201d But there are upsides to fame, too. Some of the dozens of fans who greet him at the stage door might not have bought tickets to a Broadway play otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI feel very honored to get to bring a bunch of new theater patrons through the doors,\u201d Ball said. His \u201cPitt\u201d colleague Sepideh Moafi, who will soon perform a monologue in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/audiblexminetta.com\/shows\/new-born\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNew Born,\u201d<\/a> echoed this. She also said that she didn\u2019t feel responsible for how an audience perceives her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cAll you can do is live fully and bring dimensionality and humanity and breathe life into the character that the writer has created,\u201d Moafi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s a guide to the actors and their roles, onscreen and onstage.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Pitt\u2019Patrick Ball<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A Yale School of Drama graduate, Ball broke out on \u201cThe Pitt\u201d as Dr. Frank Langdon, a suave senior resident who was accused of skimming pain pills from his patients. In \u201cBecky Shaw,\u201d at the Helen Hayes Theater, he plays Andrew Porter, a sensitive would-be writer who coddles vulnerable women and cries at pornography.<\/p>\n<p>Isa Briones<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Briones is prickly as Dr. Trinity Santos, a resident in \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d She is less irritable in \u201cJust in Time,\u201d at Circle in the Square, where she is starring as the singer Connie Francis opposite Jeremy Jordan\u2019s Bobby Darin. As a karaoke scene in \u201cThe Pitt\u201d and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2169467993905748\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">recent videos<\/a> show, Briones, the child of theater actors and a veteran of \u201cHadestown,\u201d can belt with the best of them.<\/p>\n<p>Sepideh Moafi<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Moafi joined \u201cThe Pitt\u201d for its second season as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, an attending with a complicated medical history. In one of the monologues in Ella Hickson\u2019s \u201cNew Born,\u201d which begins performances on May 8 at Audible\u2019s Minetta Lane Theater, she plays the mother of a toddler who befriends a celebrity singer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Bear\u2019Jon Bernthal<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On \u201cThe Bear,\u201d Bernthal plays Mikey Berzatto, the older brother of the main character. Having died by suicide, he appears in flashbacks. In \u201cDog Day Afternoon,\u201d at the August Wilson Theater, he is very much present as the bank robber Sonny Amato, a role that Al Pacino originated on film. Jason Zinoman, writing in The New York Times, described Bernthal\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/30\/theater\/dog-day-afternoon-review-bernthal-moss-bachrach.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">performance as<\/a> \u201ca dynamic whirligig of desperate energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ayo Edebiri<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Sydney, Edebiri\u2019s character on \u201cThe Bear,\u201d is a dedicated young chef with a genius palate. In a revival of David Auburn\u2019s \u201cProof,\u201d at the Booth Theater, she plays Catherine, whose genius is for math. Helen Shaw, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/16\/theater\/proof-review-ayo-edebiri-don-cheadle.html#:~:text=The%20actress%20stars%20as%20a,madness%20were%20simultaneously%20in%20vogue.\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writing in The New York Times<\/a>, described Edebiri\u2019s stage debut as \u201cdown-to-earth and unshowy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ebon Moss-Bachrach<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On \u201cThe Bear,\u201d Moss-Bachrach, an Off Broadway veteran, plays Cousin Richie, a friend of Bernthal\u2019s Mikey. In \u201cDog Day Afternoon,\u201d he plays Bernthal\u2019s accomplice, Sal, a nervous novice bank robber. The Times critic <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/30\/theater\/dog-day-afternoon-review-bernthal-moss-bachrach.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lauded<\/a> his \u201cnicely restrained performance of a terse, repressed man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Hacks\u2019Carl Clemons-Hopkins<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">An Emmy nominee for \u201cHacks,\u201d where he plays Marcus, Deborah Vance\u2019s confidant and former chief operating officer, Clemons-Hopkins has recently traded Marcus\u2019s tight polos for looser ensembles. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/21\/theater\/the-balusters-review.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Balusters,\u201d<\/a> he plays Brooks, a travel writer and a member of a contentious homeowners association.<\/p>\n<p>Jean Smart<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On \u201cHacks,\u201d which is now airing its final season, Smart plays Deborah Vance, a comedy legend with a luxurious lifestyle. In \u201cCall Me Izzy,\u201d which closed last August at Studio 54, she played a more modest character, a trailer park housewife and a closet poet. Jesse Green, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/12\/theater\/call-me-izzy-review-jean-smart.html#:~:text=Naturally%2C%20Smart%20plays%20the%20title,have%20endowed%20a%20poetry%20fellowship).\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writing in<\/a> The New York Times, called Smart \u201ca big presence, improving whatever she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Gilded Age\u2019Ben Ahlers<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Jack Trotter, Ahlers\u2019s character on \u201cThe Gilded Age,\u201d began as a lowly footman, then bettered himself as an inventor and a businessman. He is also a person of ambition (though less successful at achieving it) in the Broadway revival of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/09\/theater\/death-of-a-salesman-review-broadway-lane-metcalf.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDeath of a Salesman.\u201d<\/a> Ahlers plays Happy, Willy Loman\u2019s approval-seeking son.<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Coon<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On \u201cThe Gilded Age,\u201d Carie Coon\u2019s Bertha Russell is a virtuoso of intrigue. In the Broadway revival of \u201cBug,\u201d written by her husband, Tracy Letts, Coon played a hardscrabble waitress contending with darker conspiracies. Zinoman, writing in The Times, called her an \u201cexcitingly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/08\/theater\/bug-review-carrie-coon.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">live-wire performer<\/a> who sells the play\u2019s hard-boiled poetry with conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelli O\u2019Hara<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">What would Aurora Fane say to this much drinking? On \u201cThe Gilded Age,\u201d O\u2019Hara plays an old-money socialite, replete with social grace. In the Broadway revival of \u201cFallen Angels,\u201d she stars as Julia Sterroll, a wealthy, at times inebriated woman with a yen for adultery. Writing his Times review, Zinoman described her comic tone as \u201cdry, pragmatic if not <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/19\/theater\/fallen-angels-review-byrne-kelli-ohara-broadway.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slightly sociopathi<\/a>c.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two years ago, actors from the hit HBO drama \u201cSuccession\u201d dominated the theater.
