Not too long after James Gunn and Peter Safran<\/a> stepped up to lead DC Studios into the future<\/a>, they were riffing about Supergirl. The Tom King comic series, \u201cSupergirl: World of Tomorrow\u201d was one of the ideas they were especially excited about, and Gunn had a very specific image in his head.<\/p>\n

He just didn\u2019t yet know her name.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe goes, \u2018you know the young girl from \u2018House of the Dragon\u2019<\/a>? The young queen or princess? That\u2019s how I picture it, like a young punk rock girl who is just totally badass and tough,\u2019\u201d Safran told The Associated Press. \u201cI was like, yeah, that sounds fantastic, and we haven\u2019t seen that before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Milly Alcock, now 26, had just started to break out playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (later portrayed by Emma D\u2019Arcy) in the \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d prequel, when she got a request for a self-tape for the secretive Supergirl project. Alcock had been working in her native Australia since she was a teenager, but her world was suddenly getting bigger very quickly.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, she was summoned for a screen test (her first ever). She boarded a 24-hour flight from Sydney to Atlanta and gave it her best shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of had a feeling, I remember I like got back to my hotel room and I like sat down and I was like, \u2018Oh, this is gonna, something\u2019s gonna happen,\u2019\u201d Alcock said. \u201cI just had like an intuition that like, this is going to be a very exciting challenge if it goes in my favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018This is crazy, what have I done?\u2019<\/p>\n

Ten days later, Gunn texted her an article in the trade publication Deadline: \u201c\u2018Supergirl\u2019: New Woman Of Steel Is \u2018House Of The Dragon\u2019s\u2019 Milly Alcock.\u201d No phone call. No context. And all she could think was, \u201cThis is crazy, what have I done?\u201d A few days later, she was back on that 24-hour flight to film her cameo in \u201cSuperman.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

And things have not slowed down. If shooting the film was a marathon of stunts and action and emotion, the promotion of new DC\u2019s second major film is going to be its own non-stop ride.<\/p>\n

When Alcock spoke to the AP earlier this month, she had just arrived in Las Vegas from Kyoto, where she was filming another movie, and on just two hours of sleep had to muster the energy to get up on stage in front of thousands of movie theater owners<\/a> to hype \u201cSupergirl,\u201d which is out June 26.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really original and unique take on a superhero movie,\u201d Safran said. \u201cI think it\u2019s just a great movie for audiences. It\u2019s not just for superhero fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018She\u2019s just that girl\u2019<\/p>\n

The character might be less widely known than her famous cousin, but the response to her appearance in \u201cSuperman\u201d was encouraging.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s in the \u2018Superman\u2019 movie for, you know, 12 seconds, yet one of the things audiences wanted to see … more of was her,\u201d Safran said. \u201cAnd Milly in real life, she\u2019s just that girl \u2026 she is authentically a badass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps part of the intrigue is that she\u2019s not straightlaced Superman, who got to be raised by loving and gentle parents on Earth. Supergirl saw her planet destroyed and everyone she knew killed and had to fend for herself.<\/p>\n

Directed by Craig Gillespie, best known for two other films about complicated young women, \u201cI, Tonya\u201d<\/a> and \u201cCruella,\u201d this film finds the jaded Kara on an intergalactic odyssey with Krypto the Superdog and a young woman seeking revenge against the murderous Krem of the Yellow Hills.<\/p>\n

\u201cKara surprisingly reminded me a lot of myself, which I never thought I would get from playing like a superhero, from playing someone who isn\u2019t human. There\u2019s a lot of humility in her and that kind of made me fall in love with her immediately,\u201d Alcock said. \u201cSometimes you can get swept up in what other people expect, and then you kind of lose your intrinsic you-ness. And that\u2019s why people hire you in the first place, because of what you bring to something just innately being who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Why would someone have a toy of my face?\u2019<\/p>\n

Alcock didn\u2019t grow up a big film fan, but in acting found a lifeline and an outlet to communicate feelings that she struggled to in real life. It helps her exist as a person, she said.<\/p>\n

Recently, Alcock has been living in London, where she said she has a great group of friends, none of whom are actors. And she\u2019s adjusting to the reality that her face is going to be everywhere for a bit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been kind of disorientating,\u201d she said. \u201cI do this job because it gives me the ability to disappear. So then to like suddenly be so visible and so exposed is a very vulnerable experience. I\u2019m just trying to learn how to deal with that relationship. But I mean, it\u2019s exciting. Of course it\u2019s exciting. But like anything exciting, it\u2019s also terrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she was on the \u201cSuperman\u201d set, she remembered talking to David Corenswet<\/a> briefly and realizing that they had very different perspectives about the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember him being like, \u2018We\u2019re gonna have action figures, isn\u2019t that cool?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018That\u2019s so weird.
