He parked underground, unaware of the time limit after only seeing signage for the first rows of car parks upstairs.<\/p>\n

He said he was shocked to receive the fine in the mail days later.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been struggling to pay our bills and mortgage, which is why we started shopping at Pak\u2019nSave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might save $10 or $20 on a $500 shop, now we\u2019re hit with an $85 fine, which would be quite painful for us to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he understands time limits may be necessary to prevent people \u201cabusing the carpark\u201d but believed there should be flexibility for larger shops.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m going to a supermarket, I\u2019m not worrying about how long I\u2019ve been there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why it took so long, we\u2019re comparing prices, making sure every cent counts.\u201d <\/p>\n

A Foodstuffs spokesperson said a two-hour time limit was enforced at the store, from when the car enters the carpark to when it leaves, to \u201cmake sure there\u2019s a space available for everyone when they need one, particularly during peak shopping periods\u201d.<\/p>\n

The parking system is intended to prevent misuse of the carpark by non-customers.<\/p>\n

They acknowledged some shopping visits can take longer, especially larger grocery runs, and advised customers to let staff know so a note could be made.<\/p>\n

For those who receive an infringement, Foodstuffs said customers should follow the appeals process on the ticket.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said genuine cases, such as longer shopping visits or other circumstances, can be reviewed with the parking provider and resolved where appropriate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want customers to feel comfortable taking the time they need to do their shop, and the team is always happy to help if someone expects they may be longer than the standard limit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandhu has lodged an appeal with Smart Compliance Management, which issued the ticket.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Herald reported Auckland mother Rachel Gu was fined $85<\/a> after parking for one hour and 40 minutes at Pak\u2019nSave Papakura, where she had spent more than $200.<\/p>\n
