A fatberg has been blamed for causing a sewer leak that contaminated a Rotorua waterhole last week, forcing it to close for two days.<\/p>\n

Residents are being asked to use the incident as a reminder of what not to flush down the loo.<\/p>\n

Rotorua Lakes Council told Local Democracy Reporting that a fatberg \u2013 an accumulation of non-biodegradable materials such as solidified fats and wet wipes \u2013 had blocked a sewerage pipe.<\/p>\n

This blockage caused an overflow from a sewer manhole on Jameson Ave, which was detected on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe overflow entered a stormwater cesspit, which drains into the Puarenga Stream,\u201d the council said.<\/p>\n

After Wednesday\u2019s leak, levels reached 630CFU per 100ml.<\/p>\n

Further testing on Thursday returned normal results on Friday, with the water now considered safe for recreational use \u2013 including by dogs.<\/p>\n

The council said closing the affected stretch of water was a \u201cmitigation measure\u201d aimed at reducing the risk of exposure.<\/p>\n

\u201cContaminated water presents a potential public health risk, due to the possibility of sewage-borne diseases being present in the waterway,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

The council said the incident was a \u201ctimely reminder\u201d of what should and should not be disposed of via household plumbing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything that isn\u2019t pee, poo or toilet paper does not readily break down and can cause blockages in our pipes.<\/p>\n

\u201cRags, wet wipes and fats in the sewerage network can cause significant damage, particularly to the environment, and should not be washed down the sink or flushed down the toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The financial impact of fatbergs is also significant.<\/p>\n

Water New Zealand has estimated that damage caused by such blockages costs the nation\u2019s councils more than $16 million annually.<\/p>\n

Rotorua Lakes Council said it had 48 \u201cdry weather overflows\u201d over the past 12 months, of which an estimated half were caused by \u201cfats and rags\u201d.<\/p>\n

In 2022, a fatberg blockage led to a section of Linton Park being closed after wastewater overflowed from a manhole.<\/p>\n

That incident prompted the council to release a list of unusual items found in Rotorua\u2019s wastewater network, including children\u2019s toys, an oil can, a hedgehog and even a pig\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

While the affected section of the Puarenga Stream is now deemed safe, the council has advised pet owners to take precautions if they believe their animals may have come into contact with contaminated water.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be washed to prevent the spread of contamination,\u201d the council said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should then monitor your pet and, if you are concerned about their condition or wellbeing, we advise you to seek advice from a veterinarian.\u201d<\/p>\n
