{"id":418300,"date":"2026-05-08T17:57:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T17:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/418300\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T17:57:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T17:57:08","slug":"uk-borrowing-costs-fall-and-pound-rises-after-starmer-says-he-will-stay-as-pm-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/418300\/","title":{"rendered":"UK borrowing costs fall and pound rises after Starmer says he will stay as PM | Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">UK government borrowing costs fell and the pound rose on Friday as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/may\/08\/keir-starmer-local-election-losses-labour\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keir Starmer vowed to remain as prime minister<\/a> despite the Labour party losing hundreds of council seats across England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Investors calculated that some of the intense pressure on Starmer\u2019s leadership had eased, as Labour appeared on track for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/may\/08\/labour-local-elections-keir-starmer-cling-on\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smaller losses than election experts had predicted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The yield \u2013 effectively the interest rate \u2013 had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/may\/05\/uk-borrowing-costs-bond-yields-gilts-rachel-reeves\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jumped earlier this week<\/a>, amid fears that the prime minister could face a leadership challenge if the results from the local elections and the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales were particularly poor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But after Starmer insisted he would not walk away, the yield on benchmark UK 10-year gilts was down 5 basis points, or 0.05 of a percentage point, at 4.89%, outperforming the equivalent US bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thirty-year bond yields, which hit a 28-year high of 5.77% earlier this week, also fell. They were down 7 basis points at 5.56%, their lowest in more than two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The pound had gained three-quarters of a cent against the US dollar by mid-afternoon, and was also slightly higher against the euro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Matthew Ryan, the head of market strategy at the global financial services company Ebury, said the markets feared higher government spending if Starmer were replaced by a more leftwing rival, such as Angela Rayner, Ed Miliband or Andy Burnham, funded by more tax hikes and higher borrowing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Neil Wilson, an investor strategist at Saxo UK, said that \u201cbond vigilantes are lurking\u201d, attuned to the risk of political instability and the possibility that the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, might lose her job if Starmer departed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPolitical risks associated with a Starmer\/Reeves defenestration are bound up with already rising fiscal and inflationary risks for the UK economy,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Any replacement prime minister and chancellor would face the same challenges as the current leadership, said the City consultancy Capital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/economics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Economics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf Starmer\/Reeves were ousted in the aftermath of what appears to be a dire performance by the government in yesterday\u2019s local elections, we suspect the result would probably be higher interest rates and higher gilt yields than otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe doubt a new leadership would be any more successful at boosting medium-term economic growth either, not least because the current fiscal constraints would remain.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"UK government borrowing costs fell and the pound rose on Friday as Keir Starmer vowed to remain as&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":418301,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[138,219,111,139,69],"class_list":["post-418300","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-economy","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418300","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=418300"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418300\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/418301"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=418300"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=418300"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=418300"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
