{"id":419167,"date":"2026-05-09T07:20:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T07:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/419167\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T07:20:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T07:20:15","slug":"one-remarkable-photo-otago-daily-times-online-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/419167\/","title":{"rendered":"One remarkable photo | Otago Daily Times Online News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sammy Carter of RNZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tom Rae has wowed judges of a global contest again with a photo of The Remarkables.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old tramped over snow and ice, camping overnight in the Southern Alps to get one of the winning shots of the Milky Way Photographer of the Year competition.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, run by Capture the Atlas, selected 25 photos from more than 6500 submitted worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His &#8220;Night at the Remarkables&#8221; shot shows the Milky Way arched over The Remarkables in the Southern Alps, while the lights of Queenstown glow far below.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018Hey, why not climb to the top of The Remarkables ski field in Queenstown and spend the night up there, have a wild adventure, and be able to have a look down and see an element of civilisation in amongst all of this vastness in the night sky,\u201d Rae said.<\/p>\n<p>His shot was among five other winning images from New Zealand photographers taken in different iconic locations.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Christchurch, Rae said he chose Queenstown for its incredible mountains.<\/p>\n<p>He started astro-photography when he was 14 years old, playing around with his camera and the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>He spent several hours lugging camera gear and tripods up the snowy mountain range to get the shot, and says photography is not a hobby for the faint-hearted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat night was one of the more extreme examples of overnight camping that I&#8217;ve had. But so worth it to be able to get an image like that and pull it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He used a star tracker to align his camera with the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>Rae said the mage combined elements of human nature \u2013 the wildness of the mountain ranges is disrupted by the lights of the Queenstown village so close by.<\/p>\n<p>Rae\u2019s work was selected in 2023 and 2024 &#8211; the first being a panorama taken at Lake Tekapo and the other taken at Hooker Lake at Aoraki\/Mount Cook.<\/p>\n<p>He is extremely proud of his most recent winning shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is an image that I always look at and go, \u2018Wow, like I absolutely love that.\u2019 And I&#8217;m sure I will be looking at it the same way in many, many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sammy Carter of RNZ Tom Rae has wowed judges of a global contest again with a photo of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":419168,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":["post-419167","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/419167","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=419167"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/419167\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/419168"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=419167"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=419167"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=419167"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
