Tuition at its most expensive school, ACG Parnell, now costs $31,170, having risen 13% since 2024.<\/p>\n
However, small and religious schools can offer cheaper private pathways, with Amana Christian near Dunedin advertising fees as low as $4000 a year.<\/p>\n
Senior tuition fees at Wellington\u2019s Samuel Marsden Collegiate have risen 2% since 2025, the lowest increase among schools tracked by the Herald.<\/p>\n
Marsden principal Paula Wells said her school had absorbed as much cost pressure as possible to keep fee increases down. <\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing careful budgeting and detailed analysis, there was no increase to tuition fees for Years 1-10, and only a small below-inflation adjustment for Years 11-13,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
While education costs have hit new highs, Herald data suggests schools have tried to contain rises in 2026.<\/p>\n
The latest analysis covers 34 private schools \u2013 every New Zealand senior private school we could find published fee information for.<\/p>\n
Of those, the Herald has tracked 20 schools since 2024.<\/p>\n
The average 4.2% tuition rise this year was down from the 5% jump in 2025, marking the smallest increase in three years. <\/p>\n
The analysis is based on senior Year 13 fees alone and doesn\u2019t include integrated schools.<\/p>\n
The price of choice: $4000 to $36,000<\/p>\n
While elite schools might be out of reach for many parents, the Herald\u2019s new analysis shows private schools come in different shapes, sizes \u2013 and prices.<\/p>\n
Of the 34 analysed, 10 now charge above $30,000 a year in tuition fees, 14 charge between $20,000 and $30,000, seven sit between $10,000 and $20,000, and three ask less than $10,000.<\/p>\n
Families paying top dollar face an effective daily rate of about $153 \u2013 based on 192 school days and the average tuition across the 20 schools the Herald has tracked since 2024.<\/p>\n
For boarders, the bill nearly doubles. <\/p>\n
Twelve of the 34 schools offer boarding, charging between $19,153 and $23,365 a year on top of tuition.<\/p>\n
At Christ\u2019s College, a senior boarder faces a combined $59,265 a year and the addition of the school\u2019s $1785 heritage and building levy.<\/p>\n

Christchurch families have the highest average fee at $32,373, while Auckland families have more choice with Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School charging an annual fee of $7980.<\/p>\n
Where the money goes?<\/p>\n
Among more expensive schools, so-called building and capital development levies have become near-universal, typically adding $850 to $1785 a year on top of tuition.<\/p>\n
Schools say the levies are part of how they stay competitive \u2013 funnelling fee revenue back into the classrooms, theatres and sports facilities they say help attract the best students and teachers.<\/p>\n
Several schools have flagged capital projects funded in part by current fee revenue. <\/p>\n
Pinehurst School in Auckland\u2019s north has built playground and covers for its sports courts and aims to break ground on a new college classroom and block in November 2026.<\/p>\n

Epsom\u2019s St Cuthbert\u2019s College is undertaking a redevelopment of its Year 10 residential campus, Kahunui, in the Bay of Plenty.<\/p>\n
Jason Speedy, head of St Peter\u2019s School, Cambridge, said families were willing to invest in an \u201caspirational culture\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cParent fees allow enhancement and maintenance to our village-style campus and programmes set on hundreds of acres, that offer world-class national and global academic pathways and … extensive sporting, arts and service opportunities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His school\u2019s fees also included extras such as \u201cpremium, nutritious meals daily, designed for student health and great energy\u201d.<\/p>\n
Christ\u2019s College director of advancement, Bridget Woodham, said their fees included most costs and ensured small class sizes, giving teachers more opportunity to focus on student care.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur fees include curriculum-related activities, camps, sports participation and competition entry fees, coaching costs, house activities, leadership programmes, and wellbeing initiatives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
St Andrew\u2019s College rector Mark Wilson said demand remained strong as his Christchurch school\u2019s enrolment exceeded \u201cour capacity to accept places\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese families see a point of difference that they are happy to pay for to ensure their child gets the right education for them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said St Andrew\u2019s students consistently achieve \u201chigher qualification grades\u201d with a focus on developing intellect and character, while the school gave more opportunities ranging from performing arts, sports, and robotics to debating and chess.<\/p>\n

Fair fees, top results<\/p>\n
Private schools also say their fees help pay for impressive academic achievements among students.<\/p>\n
St Cuthbert\u2019s College deputy chairwoman Angela Bull said a student from her school had been awarded the Prime Minister\u2019s Award for Academic Excellence for the past two years running.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the trust board had been striving to keep the school accessible through means such as flexible payment options, she said.<\/p>\n
Marsden principal Wells said her Wellington school\u2019s 2025 NCEA results placed it as the top-performing school in the greater Wellington region, including a 100% NCEA Level 2 pass rate for domestic students.<\/p>\n
At the same time, her team had restructured the way it billed parents, claiming to give greater clarity and predictability by replacing several curriculum charges with a single fee.<\/p>\n
Pinehurst executive principal Mike Waller said his school worked \u201cvery hard to minimise any increase\u201d in fees.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur fees remain among the lowest, whilst our performance across a range of areas is amongst the highest in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Green School NZ head Nigel Barrett said his Taranaki school looked to develop academic results, skills and competencies valued by universities and employers. <\/p>\n
That included \u201ccritical thinking, communication, collaboration, project-based learning, leadership and real-world problem solving\u201d.<\/p>\n
School fees contributed to a school in a \u201cstunning natural environment\u201d, small class sizes, strong relationships and a personalised education pathway. <\/p>\n
A different kind of private school<\/p>\n
Beyond the better-known private schools sits a network of religious and regional schools.<\/p>\n
Five Christian schools and the Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School all charge under $12,000 a year. Three sit under $10,000.<\/p>\n
Auckland\u2019s Tyndale Park Christian School charges $10,080 a year, with textbooks, stationery, excursions and day trips included in tuition rather than billed separately.<\/p>\n
Principal Prasad Patchigalla said the school\u2019s \u201csize is our strength\u201d and that \u201cevery child is known and valued\u201d.<\/p>\n
Springbank School near Kerikeri charges $17,080 a year. <\/p>\n
Director Mike Warren said the figure remained \u201ccomparatively modest\u201d to other private schools, especially \u201cwhen considering the breadth of opportunities, personalised learning environment, and high standards we provide\u201d.<\/p>\n

Otamatea Christian School, in rural Northland near Mangawhai, charges $4410 a year for senior students. <\/p>\n
Principal Mark Bell said the school relied on top-up donations from local churches and individuals.<\/p>\n
The school\u2019s facilities were \u201cbasic but functional\u201d, with classrooms destroyed when Cyclone Gabrielle hit Northland having been rebuilt.<\/p>\n
The drive to deliver affordable options made them better, Bell said.<\/p>\n
