Asked for comment on this, Energy Minister Simeon Brown\u2019s office said in a statement: \u201cThe minister has been clear that the procurement process for an LNG [terminal] is underway and is being considered in the context of the conflict in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luxon said the Government was still going through a \u201cprocurement process\u201d on the LNG terminal.<\/p>\n

He said there was \u201cno change\u201d to the Government\u2019s position on the terminal, which was to continue with the procurement process.<\/p>\n

Luxon said the terminal was designed to lower power prices by removing dry-year risk.<\/p>\n

This is when power prices rise because the hydro lakes that form the backbone of New Zealand\u2019s generation are lower than usual. Currently, this risk is built into power prices. The Government says the LNG terminal would reduce prices by removing this risk.<\/p>\n

Last week, the OECD<\/a>, a group of mostly wealthy countries, warned the Government that the terminal risked pushing prices up.<\/p>\n

The organisation said that \u201cLNG will help restore security of supply\u201d but warned that the terminal \u201crisks locking in fossil fuel dependence\u201d.<\/p>\n

The report said LNG \u201cshould be treated as a transition fuel only\u201d.<\/p>\n

Labour Leader Chris Hipkins called the facility a \u201cgold-plated bad idea\u201d.<\/p>\n
