{"id":424217,"date":"2026-05-12T17:26:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T17:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/424217\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T17:26:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T17:26:10","slug":"eruption-blows-hole-in-suns-atmosphere-unleashing-solar-flare-and-potentially-triggering-northern-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/424217\/","title":{"rendered":"Eruption blows hole in sun&#8217;s atmosphere, unleashing solar flare and potentially triggering northern lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-b01a15a7-1948-4bf5-9569-931ee1e2aa64\">A solar eruption has blown a massive hole in the sun&#8217;s atmosphere, causing temporary radio blackouts and possibly triggering a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/northern-lights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northern lights<\/a> display tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists recorded an M5.7-class <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flare<\/a> on Sunday (May 10), which briefly disrupted high-frequency radio communications on the sunlit side of our planet, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s (NOAA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/node\/1484\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/node\/1484\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a>. M-class solar flares are the second strongest category of solar eruption, after X-class flares.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b01a15a7-1948-4bf5-9569-931ee1e2aa64-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/solar-flares\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/solar-flares\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/solar-flares\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solar flares<\/a> are sudden bursts of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38169-electromagnetism.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38169-electromagnetism.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38169-electromagnetism.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electromagnetic radiation<\/a> ejected from the sun. This energy travels at the speed of light, so by the time scientists observe them, they&#8217;re already here. Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/earths-magnetic-field\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a> protect us from the flares&#8217; harmful radiation, but they can disrupt radio communications traveling through the upper atmosphere, as well as satellites and spacecraft, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/sun\/solar-storms-and-flares\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/sun\/solar-storms-and-flares\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e35bd2d9-9e61-40d1-99f9-d3cbdd2c18f0\">The eruption also produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) \u2014 a slower-moving cloud of solar plasma and radiation \u2014 that can trigger geomagnetic storms and aurora displays. There&#8217;s no guarantee that the CME will hit Earth, but we could take a glancing blow, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Modeling of the resulting CME indicates that a bulk of the material should pass well behind Earth&#8217;s orbit,&#8221; a spokesperson for the Space Weather Prediction Center wrote in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/node\/1484\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/node\/1484\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">update<\/a> published Monday (May 11). &#8220;That being said, a glancing blow and or shock arrival by late on 12 May into the early portions of the 13th \u2026 can not be ruled out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-06aadd99-72e4-49b6-bf7d-9262e4a8c617\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Will there be auroras?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-91a2c814-a679-4396-8e2b-adc2611204ab\">A glancing blow could produce a minor G1 geomagnetic storm, according to the U.K.&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Met Office<\/a>. The geomagnetic storm scale ranges from G1 to G5, with G5 being the most severe. However, G1 storms can still result in visible auroras in places like northern Michigan and Maine, weak power grid fluctuations and minor impacts on satellite operations and migratory animals, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our sun has been very active in recent years after reaching <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-maximum\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-maximum\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-maximum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar maximum<\/a> \u2014 the peak of the sun&#8217;s roughly 11-year activity cycle. The solar maximum likely ended <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/has-the-sun-already-passed-solar-maximum\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/has-the-sun-already-passed-solar-maximum\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/has-the-sun-already-passed-solar-maximum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sometime in early 2025<\/a>, so solar activity is, in theory, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/the-sun-just-experienced-its-first-spotless-days-in-4-years-but-were-not-in-the-clear-yet\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/the-sun-just-experienced-its-first-spotless-days-in-4-years-but-were-not-in-the-clear-yet\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/the-sun-just-experienced-its-first-spotless-days-in-4-years-but-were-not-in-the-clear-yet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declining<\/a>. Last week, the same sunspot ejected at least 5 CMEs while it was on the far side of the sun, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spaceweather.com<\/a> reported. More explosions in the coming days could result in other CMEs striking Earth and more intense geomagnetic storms.<\/p>\n<p>Auroras appear in the sky when charged particles from the sun hit Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere, colliding with oxygen and nitrogen particles. These particles then glow different colors as they shed energy from the collision, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/nmp\/st5\/SCIENCE\/aurora.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/nmp\/st5\/SCIENCE\/aurora.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/a>.
