{"id":426265,"date":"2026-05-13T21:52:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T21:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/426265\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T21:52:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T21:52:18","slug":"china-tightens-grip-on-mali-zimbabwe-and-ghanas-lithium-as-u-s-linked-miner-exits-africas-critical-minerals-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/426265\/","title":{"rendered":"China tightens grip on Mali, Zimbabwe and Ghana\u2019s lithium as U.S.-linked miner exits Africa\u2019s critical minerals race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        Chinese battery materials giant Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt is tightening its grip on Africa\u2019s critical minerals sector after moving to secure financing control and a proposed takeover of Ghana\u2019s Ewoyaa lithium project.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        The company has agreed to assume the remaining development funding obligations for the Ewoyaa project while pursuing a proposed $210 million acquisition of Atlantic Lithium, the project\u2019s developer.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                                            &#13;<br \/>\n                                            &#13;<br \/>\n                                            &#13;<br \/>\n                                                &#13;<br \/>\n                                                    &#13;<br \/>\n                                                    &#13;<br \/>\n                                                    &#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n        Huayou Expands African Lithium Footprint&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n                                                &#13;<br \/>\n                                            &#13;\n                                        <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        Atlantic Lithium last week announced that Huayou intends to acquire all issued shares in the company for $0.25 a share in cash, valuing the miner at about $210 million.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        If approved, the transaction would further expand Huayou\u2019s African lithium footprint after its $422 million acquisition of Zimbabwe\u2019s Arcadia Lithium Project in 2022, where trial lithium sulphate production reportedly began earlier this year.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/after-years-of-delays-ghana-enters-global-lithium-race-to-help-replace-china-in-us\/84x9h6v\" id=\"e7aa5902-3545-4636-896e-b61261dadf23\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Beyond Ghana<\/a> and Zimbabwe, Chinese companies have also expanded aggressively into West Africa\u2019s lithium sector, particularly in Mali, where firms including Ganfeng Lithium and Hainan Mining have secured major stakes in strategic lithium projects.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        Ganfeng now fully controls Mali\u2019s Goulamina lithium project after increasing its ownership through Mali Lithium, the special purpose vehicle managing the asset.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        According to Mysteel analysis, Mali\u2019s Goulamina lithium project expanded its resource estimate to 267 million tonnes in 2024, equivalent to about 9.11 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, with total investment estimated at $644 million.&#13;\n    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        Meanwhile, Hainan Mining holds a 51% stake in Mali\u2019s Bougouni lithium mine, which shipped its first vessel of lithium ore in December 2025 after receiving export approval from the Malian government.
