Now, just where Metcalf ends up is unclear. Speaking before the Warriors depart for Brisbane to face the Broncos as part of the NRL\u2019s Magic Round, Webster outlined that Metcalf\u2019s situation was unchanged.<\/p>\n
Despite being fully fit, he will not play against the Broncos this week, nor in reserve grade, and will be allowed time to finalise his future without distraction.<\/p>\n

But in the age of social media, fans wanting to make their feelings known to Metcalf \u2013 and in some cases his family \u2013 are, rightly or wrongly, able to do so.<\/p>\n
And with the potential that even if Metcalf remains in Auckland for the rest of the year and even if he does sign somewhere else for 2027, Webster didn\u2019t hesitate in reminding fans to understand the halfback\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy would you disrespect someone like that?\u201d Webster asked. \u201cLuke has done a lot of good things for this club.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey don\u2019t know everything, we don\u2019t know what Luke has gone through when he goes home at night.<\/p>\n
\u201cWarriors fans are awesome. There\u2019s always going to be, at every club, one or two idiots, maybe some more, who get it wrong.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut treat him with respect. We still care about him here, we\u2019ve got a lot of time for him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just hope all the fans do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perhaps frustratingly for fans, Metcalf only re-committed to the Warriors at the end of last year. As he approached NRL free agency, Metcalf signed a two-year extension to stay at Mt Smart, in a move that made him, the Herald understands, the highest-paid player at the club.<\/p>\n
However, the desire to be a starting halfback far outweighs the money the Warriors have put on the table.<\/p>\n
And while it\u2019s been reported that the struggling St George Illawarra Dragons are going to make an offer, Webster says nothing has been decided yet.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re at a stage where he\u2019s trying to work out his future,\u201d the coach said. \u201cI\u2019ve got no update on how that\u2019s tracking.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo see it in the media before we knew a lot about it or got to have discussions about it [was disappointing].<\/p>\n
\u201cHis biggest thing is he wants to be sure he can explore his future. But at the same time, I know he\u2019s very grateful for this club and loves this club.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis future is here right now, for as long as he wants to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
While taking into account Metcalf\u2019s situation, and with Boyd\u2019s extension still to be officially confirmed by the club, the Warriors are in a delicate situation with their halves.<\/p>\n
Both Chanel Harris-Tavita and Te Maire Martin are also off-contract at the end of this year, and are free to openly negotiate with rivals.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, it was reported Harris-Tavita, the Warriors\u2019 starting five-eighth, was in talks with the North Queensland Cowboys, even if no deal appears to have been reached.<\/p>\n
As far as Webster is concerned, though, there is no reason to panic, as contract talks remain ongoing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019ve got a really good history of communicating between coach and player when we want to keep people.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really happy with the way these conversations are going. It doesn\u2019t change anything for mine, we were already down that track talking with those players.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn rugby league, you can never be sure everything is going to work out, as you can see now. But what you can be sure of is we\u2019re going to have honest and open conversations with each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose things are tracking really well, but it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s a done deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
