{"id":427188,"date":"2026-05-14T11:28:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/427188\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T11:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:28:13","slug":"spacex-prepares-to-launch-starship-v3-the-tallest-and-most-powerful-rocket-ever-built","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/427188\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX prepares to launch Starship V3, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-3780e58c-2764-4598-b66f-8c81b26678ed\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> will launch its next-generation Starship \u2014 the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built \u2014 as early as Tuesday (May 19), the company announced.<\/p>\n<p>Starship V3&#8217;s maiden voyage to space will be a big test for SpaceX, which wants to land humans on the moon for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> in 2028 and hopes to avoid the kind of spectacular explosions that have plagued some previous Starship tests.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3780e58c-2764-4598-b66f-8c81b26678ed-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The launch window for what will be Starship&#8217;s 12th test flight opens at 6.30 p.m. EDT at Starbase in southern Texas. As with previous Starship tests, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-12\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-12\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">launch countdown<\/a> schedule doesn&#8217;t end with &#8220;Starship liftoff&#8221; but rather &#8220;excitement guaranteed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7e64414e-fe23-4a09-b8e4-dbe9f016aeda\">SpaceX has experienced its fair share of setbacks with Starship. Last year, the seventh and eighth Starship test flights saw <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/watch-spacex-starship-explodes-mid-flight-for-a-2nd-time-this-year-raining-fiery-debris-over-florida\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/watch-spacex-starship-explodes-mid-flight-for-a-2nd-time-this-year-raining-fiery-debris-over-florida\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/watch-spacex-starship-explodes-mid-flight-for-a-2nd-time-this-year-raining-fiery-debris-over-florida\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fiery debris rain from the heavens<\/a>. The ninth fell short of its target, and a Starship <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/spacexs-starship-explodes-on-texas-launch-pad-in-catastrophic-failure-during-routine-test\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/spacexs-starship-explodes-on-texas-launch-pad-in-catastrophic-failure-during-routine-test\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/spacexs-starship-explodes-on-texas-launch-pad-in-catastrophic-failure-during-routine-test\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exploded on the launchpad<\/a> during a routine test before the 10th. However, Starship did end up having a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/10th-time-lucky-spacexs-starship-nails-successful-test-flight-after-string-of-explosive-setbacks\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/10th-time-lucky-spacexs-starship-nails-successful-test-flight-after-string-of-explosive-setbacks\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/10th-time-lucky-spacexs-starship-nails-successful-test-flight-after-string-of-explosive-setbacks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successful 10th flight<\/a> in August 2025, despite taking some damage, and its 11th run, in October, was clean.<\/p>\n<p>The latest Starship, made up of a Starship spacecraft and a Super Heavy rocket, stands 407 feet (124 meters) \u2014 taller than a football field is long and about 85 feet (26 m) taller than the NASA <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/space-launch-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/space-launch-system\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/space-launch-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Launch System<\/a> that carried the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-just-released-12-000-more-artemis-ii-photos-here-are-a-dozen-of-our-favorites\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-just-released-12-000-more-artemis-ii-photos-here-are-a-dozen-of-our-favorites\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-just-released-12-000-more-artemis-ii-photos-here-are-a-dozen-of-our-favorites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II mission<\/a> to orbit. It boasts a suite of upgrades over its predecessor, including new Raptor 3 engines, and it will lift off from a newly designed launchpad, according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-12\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/starship-flight-12\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> from SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-f69158d2-c63f-4c83-ae83-a07583108721\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What will happen during the Starship V3 flight?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b0ae9ee7-9628-47a2-8cec-58f71d5052a3\">If all goes according to plan, the upcoming test flight will last a little over an hour. Starship is supposed to go up in a suborbital trajectory. The spacecraft will detach from the Super Heavy booster, which will flip around and return to Earth for a water landing in the Gulf of Mexico. SpaceX is known for returning its rockets to land. But because this is the first test flight of a &#8220;significantly redesigned vehicle,&#8221; the company won&#8217;t attempt its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SD5SyQXxsAg\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SD5SyQXxsAg\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">landing site &#8220;catch<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After it ditches the Super Heavy booster, the Starship spacecraft is scheduled to deploy 22 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/starlink\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/starlink\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/starlink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> simulator satellites. These dummy satellites will be similar to the next generation of Starlink satellites. Two will also scan the Starship&#8217;s heat shield, which SpaceX has deliberately compromised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For Starship entry, a single heat shield tile has been intentionally removed to measure the aerodynamic load differences on adjacent tiles when there is a tile missing,&#8221; a SpaceX spokesperson wrote in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a successful test flight would see the spacecraft practice relighting one Raptor engine in space, before dropping down for a controlled splash landing in the ocean. (SpaceX didn&#8217;t specify where.)<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-23d6fe65-37f4-4f61-bc94-de678514bcd4\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Changes to Starship<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6a4cd22d-ca33-43b3-a1e0-4234aa5bc526\">The third version of the Super Heavy booster has a variety of novel features, including new grid fins at the bottom of the booster for stability during landing, and a completely redesigned fuel transfer tube to allow all 33 of the new engines to ignite at the same time. The Raptor 3 engines themselves are supposed to deliver more thrust than previous models.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Starship V3 also boasts new features. For example, the spacecraft has a redesigned propulsion system that allows for a new engine startup method, a higher fuel tank volume and an improved reaction control system for steering, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/updates#starship-v3\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/updates#starship-v3\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SpaceX<\/a>. Finally, changes to Starship&#8217;s launchpad include increased storage capacity for the propellant and more pumps so the rocket can be filled faster.<\/p>\n<p>The company said these changes &#8220;aim to unlock the vehicle&#8217;s core functions, including full and rapid reuse, in-space propellant transfer, deployment of Starlink satellites and orbital data centers, and the ability to send people and cargo to the Moon and Mars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-c8da2f61-aa2d-48e7-b666-94a50d62a3eb\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What does this mean for the moon?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-217d4636-1046-471a-830a-cf70cbcc9d71\">NASA is relying on commercial partners to help return humans to the moon. This includes a commercial lunar lander that NASA needs to ferry astronauts to the lunar surface during the upcoming Artemis IV mission. SpaceX has been developing a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/humanspaceflight\/moon\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/humanspaceflight\/moon\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">moon-landing variant<\/a> of its Starship for that job, but the company faces competition from rival Blue Origin and its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/blue-moon\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/blue-moon\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Blue Moon lander<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2eaa0dbe-d4b5-4d90-92c9-d945e0f3fcf5\">NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/esdmd\/nasa-strengthens-artemis-adds-mission-refines-overall-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/esdmd\/nasa-strengthens-artemis-adds-mission-refines-overall-architecture\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">moon-return plan<\/a> is a little complicated, but basically, the space agency aims to send astronauts to the moon in its Orion spacecraft, as tested in the historic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/artemis-2\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/artemis-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/artemis-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II mission<\/a>, before rendezvousing with a commercial lander in lunar orbit. The commercial lander will then take the astronauts to the surface and launch them back up to Orion for the trip home. Next year, NASA will test docking Orion with one or both of its commercial lander options in low Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is clear that lander readiness will determine which commercial provider gets to take astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028. Of course, this assumes NASA is also ready by then.
