(Image credit: ViaSat)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-278b606f-be44-447f-af91-47690973c803\">Earth watched on as a communications satellite deployed its big reflector more than 22,000 miles (35,400 kilometers) away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The satellite, ViaSat-3 F2, just deployed its large reflector after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launching <\/a>last November. In an image <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">shared<\/a> by the company Viasat on social media, you can see the striking results of this maneuver in space.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-6a799abe-b98a-46be-a007-10b9ad46f618\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What is it?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b2be05df-94cb-47e1-8baa-eb9216a67fe6-0\">ViaSat-3 F2 launched to space on Nov. 13, 2025 atop a United Launch Alliance <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40250-atlas-v-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40250-atlas-v-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40250-atlas-v-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlas V<\/a> rocket. In the first few months after that, the telecommunications satellite made its way to geostationary orbit, which lies exactly 22,236 miles (35,786 km) above Earth. This is much farther away than <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> where the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> lives, which extends to 1,200 miles (2,000 km) above Earth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>As seen in this new image, the satellite has now not only reached geosynchronous orbit, but it has fully deployed its large reflector. This step is critical to the satellite&#8217;s success, as the reflector will improve its overall broadband capacity, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/viasats-f2-satellite-blooms-targets-100-plus-mbps-in-push-against-starlink\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/viasats-f2-satellite-blooms-targets-100-plus-mbps-in-push-against-starlink\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to recent reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exciting progress for our ViaSat-3 program, as we focus on advancing in-orbit testing of our ultra-high capacity satellite,&#8221; the company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/viasat\/status\/2053943293528932699\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/viasat\/status\/2053943293528932699\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a>in its post.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d731f551-0ccd-4241-8133-9d807c8321a8\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Why is it incredible?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8ad48e50-0f38-4864-aaa4-2715bdc651f6\">The ViaSat-3 F2 satellite is a 13,000-pound (5,900-kilogram) communications satellite designed to provide high-speed satellite internet across the Americas from space.<\/p>\n<p>According to Viasat, each of the ViaSat-3 satellites (three of which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-viasat-3-f3-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have launched to date<\/a>) is made &#8220;to be capable of rapidly shifting capacity throughout its coverage area to deliver bandwidth where and when it\u2019s needed most.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We might sometimes take our connectivity here on Earth for granted.
