{"id":427610,"date":"2026-05-14T17:15:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T17:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/427610\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T17:15:17","slug":"hidden-salt-in-uks-popular-sandwiches-emj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/427610\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidden Salt in UK\u2019s Popular Sandwiches \u2013 EMJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALMOST HALF of some of the UK\u2019s most popular sandwiches qualify for a \u2018high\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/oncology\/news\/salt-intake-and-gastric-cancer-is-there-a-link\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">salt<\/a> warning under current front-of-pack nutrition labelling criteria, new research from Action on Salt &amp; Sugar has found.<\/p>\n<p>The study analysed 546 sandwiches sold across major UK supermarkets and high street chains, from Sainsbury\u2019s and Morrisons to Greggs and Caff\u00e8 Nero.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly Five McDonald\u2019s Cheeseburgers Worth of Salt in One Sandwich<\/p>\n<p>Of the sandwiches analysed, 44% would receive a red \u2018high\u2019 salt label under front-of-pack labelling guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>One in four sandwiches are classified as \u2018less healthy\u2019 under current High Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) regulations, meaning they would face restrictions on advertising and promotion.<\/p>\n<p>Government salt reduction targets, that businesses were expected to meet two years ago, are missed in 12% of sandwiches and one in 10 fail to meet calorie reduction targets.<\/p>\n<p>All sandwiches offered by Gail\u2019s, Starbucks, Coco di Mama, and Tootoomoo had high levels of salt.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Gail\u2019s smoked chicken caesar club contained 6.88g of salt: the equivalent of nearly five McDonald\u2019s cheeseburgers.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, Pollen + Grace, The Gym Kitchen, and Urban Rajah were notable for having no sandwiches high in fat, saturated fat, or salt.<\/p>\n<p>40% Above Maximum Daily Recommended Salt Intake<\/p>\n<p>UK adults currently consume, on average, 40% above the 6g recommended maximum salt intake per day, which can in turn raise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/nephrology\/news\/seasonal-salt-intake-linked-to-blood-pressure-spikes-in-men-with-ckd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood pressure<\/a>, a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>With 11.5 billion sandwiches eaten in the UK every year, even small reductions in salt could have a significant impact on public health and relieve pressure on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/general-healthcare\/news\/ai-support-jumps-when-framed-around-nhs-benefits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sonia Pombo, Head of Research and Impact, Action on Salt &amp; Sugar, Queen Mary University of London, London, UK, said: \u201cMost people choose sandwiches for lunch for their simplicity, convenience, and affordability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what they\u2019re actually eating can be a full day\u2019s worth of salt hidden between two slices of bread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 20 years after the first set of salt reduction targets were introduced, it\u2019s frankly unacceptable that some companies continue to sell sandwiches that exceed an adult\u2019s daily limit in one go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoluntary action has been allowed to drift for too long, and the result is a food environment that continues to put public health at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government must now step in with tough, mandatory measures, because leaving this to industry goodwill has clearly failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reference<\/p>\n<p>Action on Salt &amp; Sugar.
