But that shouldn\u2019t mean you neglect other parts of your body. For that reason, those muscles will tend to remain functional for longer.<\/p>\n<p>The upper body can atrophy more quickly without direct attention, especially if you begin to avoid using your upper body because you\u2019re afraid of injuring yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Well-meaning family members may take your grocery bags off you or support you with cleaning, but their kindness may be speeding up the muscle-weakening process and cumulatively contributing to sarcopenia.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-why-is-upper-body-strength-important\"\/>Why is upper-body strength important? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-716b14f3-4b82-4941-946c-d33e3fed30db\">Bovay says you need upper-body strength to support yourself in everyday life for two main reasons:<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-eec0a016-c09c-4be9-905f-ee241becd0ef\">1. Fall defence: \u201cThe ability to perform a powerful stiff-arm to catch yourself against a wall or the floor can be the difference between a minor bruise and a catastrophic hip fracture,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, if you fall, you will need to push yourself back up, once again relying on upper-body strength.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-bb364fc6-baa5-4ad3-92ac-7ca3e3baa196\">2. Adjust the number of sets and reps you do to suit your ability, but make sure you are working hard. If it doesn\u2019t challenge your muscles, it won\u2019t do you any good.<\/p>\n<p>Once you can perform three sets of 25 repetitions and still feel like you could achieve five more reps, progress to a harder exercise.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-1-wall-push-up\"\/>1.
