(Lafayette, Louisiana<\/a>) – A very strange “light” in the Louisiana sky caught the attention of many recently, and a local meteorologist, Rob Perillo, explained on social media what some may have seen.<\/p>\n

The light you see in this photo posted by Mary-Grace Stapleton shows a white beam across the night sky, and, like so many across the state, she was left asking what she was seeing.<\/p>\n

No, aliens were not visiting Louisiana for boudin or boiled crawfish, although I think they’d like it if they ever did come for it; the light was actually coming from a substance used during a rocket launch.<\/p>\n

Our friend at KATC TV-3,<\/a> Rob Perillo, explained that what Mary-Grace and others were seeing over Louisiana was actually called a “Methalox Comet.”<\/p>\n

What is Methalox<\/p>\n

Rob explained that the “comet” was named because Methalox (liquid methane and liquid oxygen) was used to propel a rocket launched by China.<\/p>\n

According to Rob’s explanation on social media, Methalox is increasingly being used for rocket launches because it offers more benefits than traditional fuel.<\/p>\n

The display you see in the photo here lasted for approximately ten minutes and was visible from as far away as Louisiana to Minnesota.<\/p>\n

I anticipate we may see more and more of this type of “comet” as more countries and private companies move away from traditional rocket fuels.<\/p>\n
