After more than three and a half years exploring the Martian surface, the rover discovered that very different rocks share the same mineral fingerprints, pointing to a watery past that influenced much of the crater.<\/p>\n<p>The findings come from a study led by Elise Clav\u00e9 at the Institute of Space Research in Berlin, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. The research team reports that three main rock formations show a surprisingly similar mix of minerals. The team reported in the study, published <a href=\"https:\/\/.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2025JE009107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets<\/a>, that they can make up as much as 16 percent of some rocks. These likely formed from chemical reactions between rocks and carbon dioxide, helped by liquid water, possibly in the lake that once filled <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2019\/05\/something-much-stranger-jezero-crater-mystery-landing-site-for-nasas-mars2020-rover\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jezero Crater <\/a>or in hot water circulating underground.<\/p>\n<p>SuperCam Analysis Reveals Details<\/p>\n<p>The discoveries were made using Perseverance\u2019s SuperCam, a sophisticated instrument that employs multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/10\/scientists-to-shoot-space-junk-with-lasers\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"107162\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laser<\/a> techniques to analyze rocks from several meters away. Researchers note that this tool allows scientists to determine both the elemental composition and the specific minerals present in a rock without ever physically touching it.<\/p>\n<p>The study also finds that minerals such as iron- and magnesium-rich carbonates,hydrated silica, and phyllosilicates are present across all three rock formations. Credit: JGR Planets<\/p>\n<p>Is Mars Really Heating Up? <\/p>\n<p>Clav\u00e9 and her team suggest that the carbonation seen in Jezero rocks could have affected Mars\u2019s climate. By trapping <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygalaxy.com\/2025\/07\/jwst-carbon-dioxide-saturns-icy-moons\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"96920\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon dioxide<\/a> in rocks, these processes may have gradually cooled the planet, changing it from a wetter, potentially habitable world into the cold, dry Mars observed today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese in situ observations may be extrapolated to other carbonate-bearing rocks on Mars and would make the amount of carbon potentially stored in Martian ultramafic rocks overall significant,\u201d stated the study team.<\/p>\n<p>The shifts in Martian minerals caused by water weren\u2019t just local phenomena.
