STUDIOS Architecture Paris and Selldorf Architects<\/a> have won a highly-competitive international competition to overhaul parts of the Louvre<\/a>, per a statement<\/a> from French culture minister Catherine P\u00e9gard. BASE will serve as landscape architect.<\/p>\n

France<\/a> President Emmanuel Macron announced the \u201cLouvre-New Renaissance\u201d project last summer. The renovation addresses a $100 million art heist that happened at the Louvre<\/a> last October, but also a series of prevalent security and maintenance issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The winning architects were shortlisted<\/a> last October. They beat out submissions by Amanda Levete Architectes, architecturestudio and Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Atelier Br\u00fcckner, Dubuisson Architecture with SANAA, and Sou Fujimoto with Ducks Sc\u00e9no.<\/p>\n

STUDIOS and Selldorf will design two new entrances for the museum on either side of the moat, on the Seine side and Rue de Rivoli side.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new entrances will augment the glass pyramid designed by I. M. Pei from 1988. This addition was designed to support four million annual visitors, but the Louvre now has almost nine million annual visitors<\/a>, warranting the new entrances.<\/p>\n

A historical east-west axis will be reactivated to better organize the sequence of arrival from Saint-Germain-l\u2019Auxerrois to the Louvre esplanade, up to the Colonnade.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The original vista which connects the \u201cGrande Arche de la D\u00e9fense from the Cour Carr\u00e9e and the Pyramid via the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Arc de Triomphe de l\u2019\u00c9toile\u201d will also be \u201cfully restored.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The dry moats, relics of the building\u2019s past as a fortress, will be reenvisioned as walkways dotted with greenery that lead to a new entrance. The museum said<\/a> the \u201ctransformed and landscaped moats\u201d will provide a \u201ccool oasis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside the museum, new dining and bookshop spaces will be located underneath ramps and in wall recesses, accessible from the moat level. New circulation routes will enhance the overall visitor experience.<\/p>\n

There will also be a new dedicated space for the Mona Lisa. <\/p>\n

The 33,000-square-foot space will be custom built for Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s prized painting and will be of \u201chigh technical standard,\u201d the French culture ministry said. The gallery will display information pertaining to the painting\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

P\u00e9gard affirmed the interventions will be \u201crespectful and contemporary.\u201d The goal is to better connect the museum, palace, and the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moving forward, a consultation period will begin between the Louvre, the winning team, and stakeholders.<\/p>\n
