Aqua has announced they\u2019re breaking up almost 30 years after they released their iconic hit, \u201cBarbie Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Danish group announced the news on Instagram overnight.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cAfter many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band,\u201d they wrote. \u201cAQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we\u2019ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of.\u201d<\/p>\n The message continued, \u201cWhen you\u2019ve been together for this long, you also learn when it\u2019s time to protect what you\u2019ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact.\u201d<\/p>\n The band concluded the message by thanking their fans and signing off with \u201cnothing but love and gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n The original four members of Aqua included S\u00f8ren Rasted, Lene Nystr\u00f8m, Ren\u00e9 Dif and Claus Norreen. Norreen left the band in 2016.<\/p>\n The band is known for their 1997 single, Barbie World, off their album Aquarium.<\/p>\n They released two more albums after Aquarium \u2014 2000\u2019s Aquarius and 2011\u2019s Megalomania.<\/p>\n In 2000, Mattel \u2014 the parent company of Barbie \u2014 sued the band\u2019s record label, MCA Records, claiming the song damaged the reputation of the Barbie brand. Some of the lyrics include \u201cI\u2019m a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world \/ Dress me up, make it tight, I\u2019m your dolly.\u201d<\/p>\n However, the lawsuit was dismissed in 2002.<\/p>\n Aqua enjoyed a resurgence in 2023 thanks to the movie Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. The song was sampled by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for the rappers\u2019 own song for the movie, titled Barbie World.<\/p>\n This is not the first time Aqua has broken up.
