{"id":436040,"date":"2026-05-20T03:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T03:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/436040\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T03:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T03:15:08","slug":"funeral-details-confirmed-as-ponsonby-intermediate-school-mourns-principal-nick-wilson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/436040\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral details confirmed as Ponsonby Intermediate School mourns principal Nick Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Wilson, 50, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland\/ponsonby-intermediate-school-principal-nick-wilson-dies-suddenly-after-medical-event\/HQESRZH2CJBKBGOLRVW6KLZSOM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland\/ponsonby-intermediate-school-principal-nick-wilson-dies-suddenly-after-medical-event\/HQESRZH2CJBKBGOLRVW6KLZSOM\/\">died on Saturday evening after a sudden medical event. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">He was survived by his wife of 25 years, Racheal, and his two children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Hopkinson told the Herald he was an \u201camazing friend, mentor, motivator and human being\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe loved his family, friends, staff, the school, and teaching students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe will continue to build on his legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">When you looked at Wilson, you would not see a principal, Hopkinson said. Instead, you might assume he was a project manager at a construction company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe drove a ute, played golf with a great handicap and loved fishing. But behind this, he had this enormous passion for education and, man, was he good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Wilson\u2019s ethos as a principal was letting kids shine in their own way, whether it be through the arts, on the sportsfield, or academically, and he was always \u201chighly visible\u201d around the school, Hopkinson said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe would ref lunchtime sports on the field, staff the road crossing, walk around the classrooms, be present in the staffroom and, with much humour, often be on the losing team at the Friday afternoon staff quiz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe once said, with a grin, that \u2018Kids don\u2019t get excited to come to school to learn maths and English, but they\u2019ll run to school to do all this other cool stuff that we do and that is when we can teach them all the important stuff\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Operators of the Young Guns Skate School remembered Wilson as their first true supporter almost two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Wilson introduced skateboarding as a school activity, something that was a \u201cdream come true\u201d for his young students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">He then backed their skate school more than a decade later, \u201cwithout hesitation\u201d, the owners said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe believed in young people, thought outside the box, cared deeply for his students and community and created opportunities that shaped lives far beyond the school grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c[Wilson] was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland\/aucklands-ponsonby-intermediate-school-to-reopen-as-community-mourns-principal-nick-wilson\/LNVN2TZEJBAYNNQDPA66JN6O6Q\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland\/aucklands-ponsonby-intermediate-school-to-reopen-as-community-mourns-principal-nick-wilson\/LNVN2TZEJBAYNNQDPA66JN6O6Q\/\">a truly good man, an incredible leader<\/a> and someone whose impact will continue for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Ponsonby Intermediate was closed on Monday but reopened yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">The day began with a full school hui, where the assistant principals addressed the school. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Counselling services have been made available throughout this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">An email sent to parents on Monday from the school\u2019s assistant principals described Wilson\u2019s death as a \u201cdevastating loss\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">They thanked the community for its wrap-around support while the school navigated heartbreak and grief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs a school, we know the news of Nick Wilson\u2019s passing will hit differently across the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs a staff, we are heartbroken and appreciate the wrap-around support we are receiving at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Tributes have poured in throughout the week, saying the death of the \u201cgreat man\u201d was an \u201cenormous shock\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m incredibly saddened by [Wilson]\u2019s sudden passing,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNick was a dear long-time friend and someone connected to so many happy memories growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Auckland-based Labour list MP Camilla Belich wrote:<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cDevastating news for the Ponsonby Intermediate and wider Auckland school community. Nick was a fantastic principal and will be sorely missed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThinking of his family, friends and the staff and students of Ponsonby Intermediate. Moe mai r\u0101 e te rangatira.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">A Ministry of Education statement said its traumatic incident team would be supporting the school for as long as needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur thoughts are with the family, staff, students and wider community at this very difficult time,\u201d a ministry spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BZfdzHgWKkSfWJdsh\" style=\"display:none\">Rachel Maher is an investigative reporter covering Auckland issues and education.
