{"id":436463,"date":"2026-05-20T09:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T09:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/436463\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T09:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T09:31:08","slug":"space-factories-edge-closer-after-experimental-capsule-survives-hypersonic-landing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/436463\/","title":{"rendered":"Space factories edge closer after experimental capsule survives hypersonic landing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"kicker \" style=\"\">Science<\/p>\n<p class=\"subtitle \" style=\"\">Varda hails success of autonomous touchdown tech and celebrates heat data haul<\/p>\n<p>American outfit Varda Space Industries thinks it\u2019s a little closer to operating factories in space after successfully landing its latest test craft.<\/p>\n<p>Varda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/offbeat\/2025\/06\/19\/varda-gets-faa-clearance-to-launch-rockets-through-2028\/495262 last year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won<\/a> the USA\u2019s first-ever license to first license fly uncrewed spacecraft that reenter the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. The company wants to do this so it can build small craft that include manufacturing facilities that create products it\u2019s only possible to make in microgravity &#8211; mostly pharmaceuticals &#8211; and figures that the relatively cheap launch services offered by private launch companies will make orbital factories economically viable.<\/p>\n<p>Spacecraft are not cheap to build, and the cost rises if they include equipment to slow from orbital speeds before reaching Earth\u2019s atmosphere. Crewed craft can be more expensive still.
